For the third time, Columbus City Council has passed a ban on assault weapons.
Two previous Columbus ordinances addressing the firearms were ruled unconstitutional by the courts.
This new ban passed Monday night prohibits citizens from buying assault weapons within city limits. It also calls for anyone who currently owns an assault weapon to register the weapon within 30 days.
The definition of an assault weapon for the purposes of this ban is any semi-automatic rifle having a detachable magazine and other certain types of features.
Passage of the ban involved several prior public meetings for citizen input, in addition to the normal readings at council meetings.
After all of the debate, some people were left unhappy by the passage, while others are glad that the ban will be in place.
These weapons can tear through a quarter inch piece of steel. They can shred the police vest. Not only shred the vest, but actually go through the officer and exiting their body," ordinance sponsor, councilman Mike Mentel said.
Others see the step as intrusive and ineffective.
"This kind of legislation won't accomplish what they think
what the goals are for now. It will not control crime. It will not lessen crime," Terence Regan from the Peoples Rights Organization said.
There are some exemptions to the law. Police officers, sportsmen and current owners will still be allowed to have the weapons.
There was no immediate indication Monday as to whether the new law would be challenged.

third times a charm i guess. But I think this is a good thing. I mean damn did you hear what those assualt weapons can do in ohio? They rip through steel, a bullet proof vest, the body of the cop wearing the vest, and then the bullet turns around after exiting the body and the other side of the vest and hunts down women and minoritys before stealing candy from babys. They make some damn evil guns in central ohio I tell you what.

I am sure crime will go down after the passage of this bill.
Crime is almost non-existent in California after we banned those evil assualt rifles. No that the 50 cal is banned, we will have no crime at all.

Washington, DC banned handguns years ago, and decreed that rifles and shotguns must be kept disassembled.
This legislation has contributed greatly to Washington being the safe, sane, crime-free garden spot that it is today ...

These are people who are deathly afraid that the gun is going to levitate(make your favorite cheesy flying saucer sound), travel on its own and massacre people!

Yet the definition of what constitutes an "assault weapon" has to do with whether they have a "detachable magazine and other certain types of features."? It's OK to "Not only shred the vest, but actually go through the officer and exiting their body" so long as you don't have a detachable magazine?

My old Winchester 30-30 can do that too. I guess they will be coming for that too in the near future.

When that happens, the "Field and Stream" crowd, who have no use for "assault guns", will wonder what hit them.
Any scoped deer rifle will soon be called a "sniper rifle", and repeater shotguns will be "riot guns".
It's coming to your city/state/country before you know it.

More incremental crap from the hoplophobes. This week it's assault weapons. Next week it will be semi-auto pistols. In a few weeks they'll go after .22 bolt-action rifles, followed shortly thereafter by shotguns. They won't rest until we're completely disarmed.
BTW, what are the STATE gun laws in Ohio? For a long time Tombstone, Arizona had a ban on carrying firearms, dating back to the days when the Earps were town marshals. Arizona has always been an open carry state, so some guys in Tombstone challenged the local ordinance. It turns out that state law (at least in Arizona) trumps a local ordinance. It would seem that if possession of so-called "assault weapons" is legal in Ohio then the city council of Columbus needs to STFU.

I often wonder about the intellegence of a "governing body" that would move to disarm people when we are in a war with and enemy that has promised to kill us all. It is kind of depressing and embarassing to me that we seem to be stuck living with these people.
I will tell you one thing...if I lived in Columbus and any of my loved ones got killed in some kind of terrorist attack..the council-persons that did it and I would have a serious "discussion" of the matter. I might have to give them a little instruction into the workings of a semi-automatic "assault rifle".

LOL. I was about to fire away until I saw that it was sarcasm.
Instead I'll fire away at Columbus by refusing to do business there.

How wonderful of Columbus liberals to provide a "grandfather" exception. Its just amazing they want to disarm every one but their favored friends. Assault weapons is a misnomer. These are legal semi-auto rifles manufactured to look like military weapons. But they aren't. I've always been amused to see liberals frightened of the menacing look of assault weapons just like they loathe all things military. Who do they think is protecting our country, huh? To judge by their actions, it sure ain't them!
