I don't hear any Republicans sticking up for anything conservative

Seven of the nine Supreme Court Justices are "conservatives" appointed to the court by Republican presidents.

I absolutely agree. G.W. Bush has forever fallen in our view from any dignified image other than a cheerleader for the troops.

He needed to be front and center with his voice and bully pulpit to the press standing right next to the Kelo's.

That he has remained silent shows he is out of touch, similar to his father, nice man, good military leader, poor American leader.

I remember the disgust that conservatives had for Bush the Elder on his pandering and appeasement of liberals, his escapes out of the country on foreign visits of any kind, avoiding the criticisms of caving into tax increases and weakly responding to a deep recession spurred in part by his policy appeasement. His "don't bother me with the little people's concerns" attitude brought about the emergence of Ross Perot that split the party and handed Clinton the Presidency by less than a majority.

Now Bush the younger is doing the same avoiding of the concerns of ordinary people, ignoring the erosion of rights of citizens, failing to show that he cares about their plight, that he will do whatever he can to help them, that he will push to reverse the Kelo decision by appointing strict constructionists to the Supreme Court and directing the Congress and lawyers for the RNC to revisit the issue and reverse it.

Bush the Younger will give us moderate justices, he will support the continued erosion of our rights by invoking fear of terrorism, and he may be right that the threat is real and the fear should be genuine. But if we lose our basic freedoms in the process what good will any of his actions have done?

But in the Kelo case, there is no connection with terrorism. There is no reason to slink back and ignore the decision's implications. There is no fear of anything by which to invoke a restriction on the freedom of property. There is no good reason for G.W. Bush to be silent in this. Is his reason for not speaking out that it is not within his powers as President? If this is his reason then the Republicans can kiss the White House and their majority in Congress goodbye because Bill Clinton just struck a chord with the concerns of the common citizen.

Clinton has consistently foregone partisan principles for personal gain. I haven't determined as of yet how loyal he is to Hillary and wondering if blackmail enters into his final decisions.

"Criticism of Clinton is justified, but what does that say that it's him, not Bush who has come out against the ruling?" (then:my post 37)

My point was that I would not give Clinton Credit, or Bush criticism, based on Clinton’s phony statement that takes the winning popular side right now. Clinton’s whole scam was to repeat polls of what we think back to us while appointing judges that do the opposite. That's his way of 'bringing us together' as demon-rats say. Bush has been very good with some important promises: tax cuts, war on terrorism, and it remains to be seen if he makes good on his judge promise.

After offering his assessment, he added, "I might be wrong..."

"... and once my focus-groups finish their final report I will tell you what I definitely believe."

Thanks.

I agree with your opinon on Clinton. I support Bush because he's not a dem and because he understands the dangers of Islamic terror. I think he does. I also consider him to be a fine human being. I'm going to remain angry with him RE eminent domain and the other 2 issues I mentioned.

I happen to think it's a hell of a situation when you have a socialist defending property rights and our guy is ignoring them. I pity the next guy from the Republican Party who calls me asking for a donation.

"I wouldn't make that old lady in Norwalk sell her house," the former president said. "She was all 70 years or 80 years old. I thought it was wrong."

Clinton takes the right position for the wrong reason.

To him, it was wrong because of the emotional pathos of an elderly woman losing her home.

Let's say the owner was a filthy rich, white male. What then?

This thing is wrong on principle, not because of the warm and fuzzy appeal of Granny and her cottage home.

I don't trust elected Repubs enough to give them money, but I believe Bush is trying to (look like he is) taking the high road by not criticizing judicial positions, similar to how he does not say anything bad about democrats. The idea is to have guys like Rove and Cheney counter attack. Clinton had a similar strategy.

Well I guess in a sense not criticizing one of the other branches of government could be said to be the "high road." Not that he always holds back on criticism of decisions made by Congress.

But, honestly, with the court rapidly dismantling our traditions of freedom and destroying our Constitution, saying nothing is not truly taking a high road. I think it's abdicating responsibility.

Look at it as a political strategy. If he attacks the court he will definitely be targeted by the left and their media buddies as playing politics with the court, with little to gain in return. The most important thing is that he pick the right judges(s) and they get confirmed. This is good vs evil and the evil forces are vast. I loved the congress of the late 90s but Clinton knew how to play the public, they didn't, and he beat them most of the time.

I don't know, sometimes a low profile is the smart strategy, sometimes you have to stand up and be counted. I don't see W as afraid to stand up for his beliefs, so I'm forced to acknowledge that eminent domain, CFR, and abuses of interstate commerce are not big deals for him. That makes me mad.

But I agree, his nominations for the court will say plenty. They'll have a major effect on the future of the country too.
