The news that the London terrorist attacks were carried out by second-generation Muslim immigrants should not surprise us. For years now we in the West have indulged a whole set of destructive ideas whose bitter fruit we will all continue to harvest, as more and more unassimilated and disaffected immigrant children turn against the countries that welcomed their parents and provided them with a prosperity and freedom unknown in their countries of origin.

This baneful idea goes by the name of multiculturalism. Don't be fooled by marketing: multiculturalism is not simply a call to respect cultures different from one's own. In reality multiculturalism is a therapeutic melodrama of Western crimes against peaceful peoples “of color” who were subjected to racism, sexism, slavery, colonialism, imperialism, and environmental degradation.

Today, however, our public culture and education are supposed not just to acknowledge but to celebrate as superior these cultures the immigrant has abandoned, and to allow him to create a separatist enclave in which that old culture lives on no matter how much it contradicts Western political ideals.

The relevant point is that the left has never really been drawn to Communism or eco-freakism or anti-racism or anti-imperialism.

The important thing is that a great many people in the West despise their own culture and support all these other issues simply because they are anti-Western.

How are we to reverse the trend? This has taken many decades to become ingrained. I wonder if we have the time left to act before there is no West to speak of.

This is what is going on in just about every American grade school. The multi-culturalist indoctrination that kids are getting is shocking to just about anyone who took classes before the liberals took over our nation's school systems.

The important thing is that a great many people in the West despise their own culture and support all these other issues simply because they are anti-Western.

My take is liberals act the way they do to cover their guilt that they live such decadent lives of opulence, and they think third-world people are suffering because the third worlders don't have their luxuries.

It has never dawned on the liberals that someone living in a thatched hut with a dirt floor and a family they love and can feed, just might be happy despite not having a personal trainer and a spa.

Furthermore, the very thought that the liberal should give up his luxuries never occurs to them--they just lecture us about how evil we are, then they retreat to their summer home and hang out around the pool and tennis courts.

Four characterizations of the West contribute to the anti-Western stance Buruma and Margalit call Occidentalism and are used to justify attacking individual Westerners as less-than-human beings. The West prefers the sinful city to the virtuous countryside; the West destroys heroism and replaces it with trading; the West thinks only of matter and not of spirit; the West worships evil. Buruma and Margalit argue that the first two of those conceptions, typical of secular Occidentalism, are themselves Western, products of European romanticism that early-twentieth-century Japan and Germany exploited to their own ruin. The third idea informs Russia's long struggle with the West but stems from German romanticism, in particular, with its sense of the wounded national soul. The fourth, peculiar to religious Occidentalism, animates radical Islamism but derives from the good-evil polarities of Persian Manichaeism that the young Augustine embraced. Buruma and Margalit conclude that these ideas' lives are "a tale of cross-contamination" that cannot be ended by answering anti-Western intolerance with more intolerance. Yeah! wonderful article, thanks for posting it. I can only hope that those who read it and comprehend it, pass it along to those younger members of our society as an alternative read to much of the 'crap' being fed them at our institutions of higher learning.
