UNDERCOVER police sniper squads are tracking as many as a dozen Al-Qaeda suspects because security services fear they could be planning more suicide attacks, writes David Leppard.
The covert armed units are under orders to shoot to kill if surveillance suggests that a terror suspect is carrying a bomb and he refuses to surrender if challenged.
The deployment of the teams in the past week signals the huge intelligence gap that has opened up since the London bombings.
Police fear the suspects could be planning a further wave of attacks but do not have enough evidence to arrest them, or place them under the governments new anti-terror control orders.
Sir Ian Blair, the Metropolitan police commissioner, warned last week that there was a very strong possibility of more terrorist bombings.
Scotland Yard and MI5 say there may be more bomb factories. However, officers admit that they have no idea which suspects could be planning the next attacks so they are deploying the sniper squads as an emergency measure.
A member of S019, Scotland Yards elite firearms unit, said: These units are trained to deal with any eventuality. Since the London bombs they have been deployed to look at certain people.
Ping!
Go get em Britainia!!
If the intelligence is that good, then smoke them. Why wait?
Anyone know why they would tell reporters this?
This is "freedom" gone mad.
crireria = criteria
To make all the jihadis very nervous.
Good thing you don't have to deal with the ACLU....I agree target practice works for me........
Before anybody chimes in with the "loose lips" chant, think of the effect of this news on all the suspects out there. There can't be more than a handful of these sniper teams, but now EVERY terrorist--even the ones the authorities have no idea even exist--has to be looking over his shoulder wondering if he's in somebody's crosshairs. This is a huge mindf*k.
Cool! If we have to tolerate Islamists in society, give them each their own SWAT sniper team.
Is it me, or is that Dick Durbin in a turban?
Is this for real or a ruse? For 'sniper teams' to effectively follow a freely wandering individual throughout a metropolitan area would imply having a lot of sniper teams scattered on a myriad vantage points. After all a person only needs to turn a corner to negate the effectiveness of one sniper team. Or could it be that when they say 'sniper' they actually mean 'armed shadows' that follow the person on foot, and will shoot the person should he/she act in anyway that stinks of Jihadi? In essence tagging the suspect's movements and following him like white on rice, and ready to blast him a new opening should he do anything that seems terrorist-esque. Because the idea of 'sniper teams' scattered all over 'following' a person in a city seems a tad too far-fetched.
It's too late to shoot them then. If you shoot them, they'll just detonate where they are and will still kill a lot of people. If you suspect they're Al Qaeda, pick them up and worry about legalities later. Peoples lives are at stake.
Good observation. Dick Durbin is, however, far more dangerous to the safety of the USA.
Um.....with all the CAMERAS there are in London, shouldn't be TOO hard to "follow" them, should it? As someone else says.....this is a great Mind Game to play on them.
Hell, with that....
If they break wind, fire!
