SMOKERS NOT WELCOME AT WINTHROP BEACH, Maine - Then post a sign!
Maine Smokers Rights ^ | 7-16-05 | D. Brennan

What's up in the town of Winthrop, Maine? SMOKERS NOT WELCOME AT WINTHROP BEACH!

Winthrop proves smoking is not a health issue at all.  But it's all about CON T R O L!

7-16-05 - I was notified of the ridiculous treatment given to one family just because a family member was smoking.

A cop approached the family and told them they would have to leave because this was a "no smoking beach."  The family, as you can see, is not "on" the beach, but on the grassy area.  There were no signs stating that the area was smoke free.  The cop told them that there was a sign, but it was now "gone."

Who pays for the care of Winthrop Beach?  The taxpayers?  People in Maine who smoke are paying well above their fair share of taxes.  Tax payers are also paying for this "cop," who evidently had nothing better to do then harass a family because one of the adults  was smoking.

Rule #11:  Trash, debris or cigarette butts must be placed in trash containers.

The only signs that were posted.  If Winthrop wants a smoke free beach, they need to get their act together and POST said signs!  NOW!

Well, I usually use a Coke can. But if you don't have one, you can just put the cigarette out and throw it into the trash receptacle that is provided.

Problem is, considering the number of butts I see on the beach, not everyone is as conscientious as you are :)

Sounds like you live in a very dumpy area. I've not seen ANY butts on our beach all summer nor last summer.

Now, now, no need to get snide. I don't live at the beach, but I do visit them. If you guys keep yours clean, good for you. There are some that don't.

There were NOT a lot of cigarette butts. That was the least of the trash I would find.

I'm thinking that if non smokers are finding a lot of "butts" out and about today, that it's not just a protest from smoker's of how they are being treated.

A self-governance BTTT. People in Winthrop Beach are free to discourage smoking if they want to, while smokers are free to smoke or not in Winthrop Beach.

I would look to illegal aliens.

I see how they leave the parks after their weekend festivities.

I would think they would leave the beaches the same way.

Well, if someone doesn't care about their own health it's hard for them to care about the health of others.

And guess what!  There has to be a sign posted stating such!

If there is no sign, then that cop trying to catch smokers is like a hunter shining a light on a deer at night.

PUT UP A SIGN!

Then smokers can know ahead of time before they lay down their blankets and gear.  What's fair is fair. Not to be blind sided by some cop.

You have a point. I've also heard the point made saying "ignorance of the law is no excuse."

It's been hell.

ALL Maine restaurants were forced into a smoking ban in 2000.  Then, the anti's forced a total smoking ban across the state in January of 2004. (Bars, sports inns, bowling alleys, nightclubs).

No longer do I go out to eat.  No longer do I linger over coffee and a cigarette in my favorite restaurant or sports bar.

But, I'm saving tip money.  I just order out or bring food home.  But I miss going out to breakfast and dinner.  Oh well.

For your information, this family searched the Winthrop's City Council minutes, and no where was it posted about this ban.  I wouldn't call them ignorant, and that's for sure.

So the town places a sign on the beach, and that is that?

I agree with you're sentiments, but it is not nice to directly link to pics on other people's websites.

Sorry, I meant it's not nice for your ISP to not give you enough bandwidth.
