Dean falls flat in the Hamptons (Plutocrats stay away from Howard-hosted fund-raiser.)
New York Magazine ^ | July 18-25 | Greg Sargent

Posted on 07/18/2005 2:07:08 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Where are the Hamptons Deaniacs? Some of New York’s wealthiest Dem contributors were no-shows at a $5,000-per-couple Amagansett DNC fund-raiser Howard Dean hosted at the home of Margo and Robert Alexander on July 9—prompting worries that the donor elite are shutting their wallets to protest Dean’s shoot-from-the-lip party leadership. Sources say big-shot supporters Hassan Nemazee, Robert Zimmerman, Carl Spielvogel, and Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel played hooky. “Dean grew up in the Hamptons, and it was his first time back as chair, so he should have filled the room,” concedes a DNC official. “DNC staffers were really disappointed. It spoke to the lack of confidence in Dean among the donor leadership.” DNC spokesperson Karen Finney responds, “It was wonderfully successful and gave the governor a chance to really listen to what people had to say. Unfortunately, due to other plans, those folks couldn’t attend."—

One does tend to get the "chance to really listen" when you're nearly one-to-one, LOL.

When I think about the DNC these days, and read pieces like this and today's posted article about the Dems' fundraising falling far behind the Republicans' I picture the dark tower collapsing at the end of Return of the King, to Howard Shore's triumphant score.

LOL

I bet the reason they didn't show up is because they have been told to give their money directly to Hillary...

I seem to remember a thread a few days ago, that was about how FAST and how MUCH money that Hillary has "raised" in the last couple of months....

I was playing HALO2 with my boys the other day, when one of the marines in the game was attacked by an alien. I kid you not, but the Marine screamed the Howard Dean screem. AIIIEEYYYYYEEAAGGHHHH!!!!!! They put the sound from the scream into the game. My son and I (also a freeper) died laughing at their ingenuity.

Carl Spielvogel is on the board of one of the world's largest investment funds and his wife is maybe the most prominent activists/fundraisers in the Hamptons.

This is a huge disappointment for the Bikepathian Prophet.

Why doesn't Dean just take is perscriptions forms with him and write one ot more for each person with a medical problem who writes a check? He can't have an ethical problem with that. He doesn't have an ethical problem with anything, he's a dem.

Technically she has four, since Barbara and Lee are a combo.

That name makes me picture Barbra Streisand at the end of "A Star is Born," where she proudly states, "I'm Esther Hoffman-Howard."

Amb. Carl Spielvogel and Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel

A busy Tuesday night in Manhattan - (more photos here)

A lot going on in Manhattan last night. Over at the Plaza the Aspen Institute held its 20th Annual Awards Dinner, paying tribute to their 2003 Leadership Honorees: Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the UN, Robert E. Rubin, Secretary of the Treasury under Bill Clinton and Patty Stonesifer, president and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

William Mayer, chairman of the Aspen Institute was joined by Walter Isaacson, President and CEO of the Institute along with Frederick B. Whittemore, dinner chairman; the Honorable Ann Richards and Mort Zuckerman, Dinner co-chairs.

This black-tie dinner draws a very distinguished crowd. Queen Noor, Dr. Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State under Mr. Clinton was there along with Mr. and Mrs. David Boies, Susan Braddock, Henry and Wendy Breck, Gov. Gaston Caperton, the Honorable Henry Catto and Mrs. Catto, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Dawkins, Judy and Avery Corman, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Crown (Mr. Crown is vice chairman of the Institute), Jack Valenti, Gail Hilson, Ambassador Carl Spielvogel and Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, Zoe Baird, Congresswoman Jane Harman (D- Ca.), Senator Gary Hart, Evelyn and Leonard Lauder, Sugar Rautbord, Cathy Isaacson, Bill Joy of Sun Microsystems, Harley Baldwin, Barbara Goldsmith, Christopher Walling, Michael Kinsley, Mr. and Mrs. Mel Karmazin, Nancy Bass, proprietress of the Strand Bookstore; Tom Kranz, Connie Milstein, Ellie and George Munroe, Ann and Bill Nitze, Mr. and Mrs. Robert MacNeil, Nina Rosenwald, and Dr. and Mrs. Cliff Wharton were among the more than 200 guests for the evening.

Ann Richards serves as emcee of the Insitute’s dinner. This (wildly) popular lady who now makes a good part of her living giving speeches all over the nation, has become New York’s most prominent new (part-time) citizen (dividing her time between here and Austin and all points east, south, north and west). She was at the Library Lions last night, and somewhere in between she lost her voice. Although the show must go on, and it did; what was lost in the verbal delivery was compensated for by the bright eyes and warm smiling flashing.

The Aspen Institute Global Leadership Award (awarded this year to Kofi Annan) “reflects the expanding international scope of the Aspen Institute, bestowed upon a leader on the world stage who successfully promotes the ideals of global peace, intercultural understanding, and wide-spread human progress that are critical to the mission of the Aspen Institute.”

If the Democrat Party can not fund-raise, it is spent as a force. Much the money that used to go to the Donks now goes either to MoveOn.org or straight to Hillary!. These two dwarf the DNC in fund-raising power.

The Clintons have destroyed the Democrat Party. For that, we owe them a debt of gratitude. With this new effort by Hillary! to monopolize the money, the destruction continues.

The woman in grey is the former Governor of Texas, Ann Richards, who was most famous for her 1992 DNC speech when she insulted President George Herbert Walker Bush by saying he just couldn't help it, because he was born with a silver foot in his mouth.

Which, you gotta admit, is a pretty good line...

It was even more fun a couple of years later when she was spanked inglorously at the polls by GWHB's even more inarticulate son.
