Her written record is very sparse al la Souter. Like Souter she has spent most of her time as Distrcit Judge, thus no written record. I have and will again criticize the appointment of question marks to the SCOTUS by the Bush family.
I think Dubya has learned from his Dad's mistakes.
Souter never was a district judge -- he was on the Court of Appeals for only a few months.
Clement was a district judge (trial) for about 10 years (appointed by Bush I) and has been a court of appeals Judge for 4 years (longer than Thomas and about the same as Scalia and Bork).
I agree. I would like somebody that is more clear like Jones. I don't want Souter 2.
My concern is that nobody seemed to be the slightest bit concerned about Clement until now..and then all of a sudden people are like..."wow, she doesn't have a record." Well, where was this worry yesterday?
Sometimes the herd mentality on FR and other conservative sites is just as bad as DU.
And my complaint is NOT that we are looking at her record. It is important that we make sure not to nominate someone whose philosophy is questionable, and it may be with her. But, until now, I was being led to believe by everybody on the other threads that Clement would be great. Now, once she is possibly going to be nominated, the tune changes completely. It is frustrating.
One thing to pick a stealth candidate like Roberts who would be confirmed but is a strong conservative it is quite another to go with a female with no record.
Roberts would be a perfect candidate he has no smoking gun against him and legal professionals say he is 90 percent as conservative as Luttig and he would be very confirmable he was just confirmed by the senate.
I don't get the he has to pick a woman or hispanic did you hear Reagan get the credit the last couple of weeks for picking the first woman. No the dems took the credit for O'Connor. This pick can last 30 years who cares about the short term political gains.
If Bush wants someone without a record go for Roberts I wouldn't trust Clement at all. She ruled for the defense in a lot of civil cases sounds like a wishy washy O'Conner clone.
I read when the white house was expecting to replace Renquist for chief justice white house sources said a lot of the women being considered weren't conservative enough to replace Renquist I would bet Clement was on the list as not conservative enough to replace Renquist which makes her wrong for this seat.
I am fascinated by how everyone predicts all sorts of poor choices by the President, given his track record, which is very good on judicial appointments and the fact that he keeps his word.
