WASHINGTON - President Bush chose federal appeals court judge John G. Roberts Jr. on Tuesday as his first nominee for the Supreme Court, selecting a rock solid conservative whose nomination could trigger a tumultuous battle over the direction of the nation's highest court, senior administration officials said.

What does everyone know on this fellow.. Good solid in what ways?
Who leaked it??
Karl Rove & Robert Novak of course!
Bet it wasn't Karl Rove.
If you go with what Drudge has (a quote from Roberts concerning Roe v Wade), then we have a BIG fight coming.
Let the games begin!
I'll guarantee you that DC won't have enough Chivas for ol' Teddy tonight!
LOL!!
In his defense, Roberts told senators during his 2003 confirmation hearing that he would be guided by legal precedent. "Roe v. Wade is the settled law of the land. ... There is nothing in my personal views that would prevent me from fully and faithfully applying that precedent."

take a look ...
The old media draws a line in the sand, there's' only one opening.
Does anyone know where this guy stands on the personal rights secured by the Second Amendment?
To the Democrats I say:
BRING IT ON
No matter who gets picked, it won't be a liberal/socialist activist, so the Dems will not like it.
Accept it, and get ready for more BS than a beef farm can generate....!!!!
Let me be among the first to say Crow is fight tuff eating, but mine is simmering on the stove.
"Roe v. Wade is the settled law of the land."
That contradicts his other comments about Roe v. Wade as being "wrong"
This is a super choice......... all the way down the line. Conservatives should be ecstatic!!
fight=mighty :~)
Ruling on the appellate court is a completely different issue than ruling on the Supreme court. The appeals court follows precident, the Supreme Court sets precident.
I'm glad it's not Gonzales. Go Bush!
It is being said that he will uphold RoeVWade and President Bush is well aware of that, and it is being said President Bush did not make RoeVWade his priority when choosing Roberts.
On the plus side Roberts was instrumental in getting the President elected during the infamous vote count.
As a Supreme Court Justice he has no obligation whatsoever to recognize Roe v. Wade as anything other than the trash it really is.
I am so happy that he is going to back up wrong decisions. Hewitt says he has great "mainstream credentials". That should make all of us warm and fuzzie. I guess he makes great mainstream laws out of whole cloth. I sure hope he is not another Souter.
I read the article and it appears that Roberts was speaking not for himself or a group of judges. He was stating the position of the first Bush administration in an abortion case brief - which he won. So he has an easy out that he was merely restating the administration's existing policy. Libs will still scream.
If Roe v Wade is overturned (and it should be because it is not a right guaranteed in the constitution) we will all then simply get the chance to vote on it in our individual states. This would be called 'law making' and is commonly used in a democracy. I suspect many states will allow abortion with some restrictions attached (not after 4 months for example) while other states will not allow it at all...analagous to the death penalty. A federal law might trump any state law but, a law it will be, not a dictum sent down from on high by 9 judges.
The left likes to claim that president Bush was 'selected' back in 2000. This is laughable, however; it is quite obvious the supreme court 'selected' abortion when an election on this matter was what was needed.

BATTLE!
BIOGRAPHY OF JUDGE JOHN G. ROBERTS -- a conservative for the USSC
There is going to be so much pressure on him for this, this is going to put roe vs wade in the spotlight and the pro choice pro life camps are going to both go nuts over this.
Don't you just love George Bush? After all the speculation, "consulting" and second guessing in the press, he calls out the Dems to a fist fight in the middle of the floor - without gloves!!! I love this man!!
I like Thomas's view on "settled law."
Why can't we get another like him?
ML/NJ
But the question he was asked to solicit that response was whether he agreed with the decision. He dodged the question, rather than saying he agreed that such a right existed.
From what I'm hearing from people I trust, I think it's time to break out the Dom Perigon bubbly.
Roberts sounds like a solid guy, the type I'd like to have as a next door neighbor.
I thought it was John C Roberts, not John G. Roberts
What will the "scandal" be? He ate a box of Cracker Jacks once and DID NOT open the toy??!!!!!
Thanks...glad we got that cleared up.
pic of John Roberts on Yahoo.
Either the AP's political editor took the day off, or something weird is going on.
I wonder if the lefties have decided to save the big guns for the next nomination?
Me, I want someone who is anti-big government, and pro tort reform. I.e. Edith Jones was just what I was looking for.
I can dream can't I?
I hope that's it. Then I hope that they "save the big guns" for the third nomination. And then I hope that they decide to "save the big guns" for the fourth nomination...see where I'm headed...?
Nope. Didn't pay SS on the little kid from down the block who he hires to mow the lawn.
abc reports that he is a practicing catholic, white man and a conservative, like it was some sort of f-king illness
"That contradicts his other comments about Roe v. Wade as being 'wrong.'
Great! (I hope the libs take this bait)
If the Dems can play both sides, why can't we?
..bite into a "Tootsie Roll Pop", before he got to the center...or some someother liberal nonsense.
I knew Dubya wouldn't let us down.!!!
FR leaked it some time ago on several threads.
After Roberts accepted, the President called Frist, Reid, Specter and Leahy. My leak money is on Leahy.
