My sincere condolences. I'm facing a similar situation and I hope I have the courage you've demonstrated.
Here's to Sparky:
Why animals don't live as long as people.
>
> Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker.
>
> The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle.
>
> I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
>
> As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt Shane could learn something from the experience.
>
> The next day I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him.
>
> Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
>
> Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
>
> The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.
>
> We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
>
> Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."
>
> Startled we all turned to him. What came out of him mouth next stunned us...I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
>
> He said. "Everybody is born so that they can learn now to live a good life - like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."
I know you hurt. My Jake is 14 years old, and I'll have to go where you are right now when he dies.
(Jake is the best English Springer I've ever had)
May you be comforted in your time of grief.

'there are lots of cats to annoy,'
So, doggie heaven is also cat hell?? :>)
As an old teacher of mine once remarked many years ago: "The more I know man, the more I love dogs."
Their love for us is of the purest and most sincere.
I'm sure your love for him was immense and his love for you infinite.
2. You need to post the picture in FR. To do that, in the post you would use type the following:
<.img src="http://www.photobucket.com/something/chicagolady/sparky.jpg">
Assuming you had created an account and uploaded a photo and named it sparky.jpg. Photobucket will supply you with the entire linkname (URL) to post.
I hope this helps. FRmail me if you need more help.
Please accept my condolences on your loss. As I have said many time, if heaven doesn't have my beloved pets, then I don't want to go there. I have a kitty (the sister of my 23-yo) and a dog waiting for me there.
Beautiful dog.
It really is a Wyle E. Coyote and Roadrunner situation between those two, but I have caught them snuggling on the couch--so they do really adore each other.
I love german shepherds! I can't imagine what it's like to lose a best friend of 12 years.
sorry to hear about your loss. losing a best friend would be tough, i will deal with it one day although i dont know how. i'd love to see a picture, please ping me when you post it.
We had a dalmation (who died at 17 yrs young) named Speckles. By day, he would chase and tourment the barn cats, but at night, especially in the winter, you would go into the barn and all of the cats would be piled on top of him sound asleep, like a big warm fuzzy cat blanket!!
We have a spare ... :) Check my profile.
I love the brown markings on her paws. Almost like a Siamese cat.
oooh...did you just get that puppy?
My dad had a beautiful german shepherd he bought for 50 dollars in Georgetown, CA. When we brought him home he was covered with fleas. He passed away a week before my dad in 1994.
If my best friend died, I don't think I could get the same breed again....
I didn't mean to sound cavilier. Thanks, it was hard, and I can really relate to Chicagolady right now. The grieving process is long, but it helps to put up pictures and talk about all the goofy things they did. Like chase racoons, or go on that excellent adventure to the farm next door. Or how they crossed their paws when they slept, or snored at night. Stuff like that. It really helps to talk to other pet owners, people without pets just can't relate to the bond we form with our animals.
