They apparently prosecuted someone over it in 2000 and the constitutionality of the statute was upheld in a Texas court

How the heck can a Texas Court rule on the Constitutionality of a Federal statute?

One day a census-taker came by my house and one of the questions was about my race.

Now, I am white as a sheet, and the question was stupid. But I guess he had to ask.

When I told him I was an Eskimo, you should have seen his face. Total shock. I asked "Anything else?" "No, sir." "Thanks, and have a nice day."

I shut the door and he went on his way.

What can I do to make this guy cease and desist?

The next time he comes to the door, wear a towel on your head and ask him for directions to the Chicago Sears Tower. He'll never bother you again.

Federal district court sitting in Texas. Sorry, my post should have been better phrased.

Question: How do they find out you lied? Supposedly these questionnaires are anonymous. Will the Census Bureau track every lie you told.

The press isn't exactly going to fall all over itself to break the stunning "Census worker leaves NOTES ON MY DOOR!" harassment story.

The threat of going to the press is all it might take. And hey, the press does love the 'poor little guy being beat up by the system' story.

They are certainly not anonymous to the Census Bureau. How do you suppose they know you've not returned your completed form?

NO SOLICITORS!!
TRESSPASSERS WILL BE SHOT
SURVIVORS WILL BE SHOT AGAIN

With that kind of attitude, you'll be welcome in Texas anytime, sir.

This guy is going to keep hammering you until you give him an interview.

That's not true. They eventually give up or obtain the information in some other way.

I haven't contributed information to a census since 1980.

Why are they contacting you in a non-census year? Why are they seeking only financial info? I think you should contact the highest level Census official you can find (not by email, not by your home or cell) from a payphone.

I am suspicious of this. Yes, a census can be taken in a non-census year in a local area, usually to determine a body count for some kind of funding. But, just wanting your $$ info...that's strange. I think you need to see some bona fides, and answer their questions...over the phone!

I see nothing in that law that prevents me from charging for my time for the interview. I don't give interviews for free, and though I am perfectly willing to give answers, I will require a credit card for billing purposes, with a large retainer to start.
