John Roberts' Wife Involved With Pro-Life Women's Group

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Supreme Court nominee John Roberts appears to be pro-life in his views about the issue of abortion, but the philosophy his wife has on the topic is crystal clear. Attorney Jane Sullivan Roberts has been associated with the pro-life group Feminists for Life of America for more than a decade. Mrs. Roberts, an attorney at the high-powered Washington law firm of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, currently serves as the pro bono legal counsel for the organization, which focuses on how abortion is a disservice to women.

From 1995 to 1999 she served as Executive Vice President on Feminist for Life's board of directors.

"Jane is a brilliant attorney," says FFL executive director Serrin Foster. "We are very proud of her and appreciative of her service to Feminists for Life and women and children."

However, Foster told the Chicago Tribune that Jane Sullivan Roberts' views doesn't necessarily have a bearing on the Supreme Court nominee's philosophy.

"In today's world people know that spouses do different things," Foster said. "He is not associated with FFL. Her work and what she does should stand alone."

Roberts' involvement underscores the unique approach the pro-life group takes as it seeks to educate society that women should not lose normal privileges because they are pregnant.

In 1998, she drafted an affidavit for the organization for a Kentucky case brought by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of teenage mothers denied membership in the National Honor Society. The academic group claimed the teen mothers should not be a part of the group because of their pregnancies, despite their achievement in the classroom.

Feminists for Life argued that the Grant County, Kentucky, school system had discriminated against the two students, violating Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the state and federal constitutions, and the Kentucky Civil Rights Act. The organization said the teenagers would have been able to be a part of the honor society had they had abortions -- a situation Foster's group deplores.

Ultimately, courts decided in favor of the students and ruled the pregnant teens must be allowed to be a part of the honor society because their grades warranted membership.

During Mrs. Roberts' term on the FFL board, the organization joined other feminist groups in arguing for passage of the Violence Against Women Act, fought for enhancing child support enforcement, and fighting child exclusion provisions in welfare reform which would have encouraged abortions.

Now, Roberts primarily does work for the organization on trademark issues and contracts for employees.

The Robertses married in 1996, when they were both in their 40s and the couple tried to have children. The were not successful and the two have since adopted two children, Josephine and John, now 5 and 4.

Clearly Jane Sullivan Roberts is a Feminist and has fought for the rights of feminists. The weirdo/wacko, anti-women groups seem to be attacking her style of feminism.

And you will not get this facts from the MSM as found in this article courtesy of the interview with Serrin Foster. Having heard Serrin Foster speak, if Jane Sullivan Roberts is half as strong willed a woman as Serrin Foster, then wife Jane will be more than strong enough to defend any attacks on her husband John.

FFL are real feminists in the style of Susan B. Anthony, and not a Man's pawn group like NOW, Planned Parenthood or NARAL. (Men have benefitted greatly by the reduction of women becoming just a sexual toy because of the policies of NOW, Planned Parenthood, and NARAL -- making it easy for men to leave women and relationships -- and removing any child bearing out of the relationship by killing the baby so that men are free to have sex and use women).

Abortion is what is referred to as taking child bearing out of the relationship. Take responsibilities out of relationships, and people just become sexual toys -- IMHO.

Wow, great post, I've been saying that for YEARS, and this just doesn't occur to people. The whole "womens' choice" thing is bogus and a lie, and I still contend that a frightening majority of women don't "choose" abortion at all, but are coerced by their spineless boyfriends, terrified of 20 years of child support, making flowery promises of "later, when we're ready...." only to dump her a few months later when he gets tired of her.

I don't really care whether John Roberts or his wife are pro-life. The question is whether he is anti-Roe. The primary objective of Feminists for Life is not to prohibit the choice of abortion, but rather to persuade women not to make the choice. That's a crucial distinction.

Oh, and note that they are feminists first, and pro-life second. ;^)

I agree with all you responded with. It just needs to be repeated [your message] as often as we can -- so that younger folks can pick up the message.

The Silent No More Awareness campaign (who have regretted their abortion) have information about some of the bad side effects on women -- not being able to have a lasting relationship after an abortion, as well as turning to drinking and drugs.

Then there is the sham that young women are getting breast cancer and dying because of abortions at a very early age.

The so-called feminists group (in name only) of NOW, Planned Parenthood, and NARAL are sacrificing women's lives to sweep this under the carpet, and I am not too happy about that...

Women are being used. But abortion is also killing some women, or injuring them psychologically -- one woman I came across still regrets her abortion (after more than 50 years).

God bless -- sorry for the long post -- but I am tired of women being hurt...

Probably should be FEMINISTS (bold and ALL CAPS) -- these women, if convinced of something, will chew up and spit out the opposition. Serrin Foster had a fire lit under her when I heard her talk -- you could tell she was a very determined person with a message to deliver.
