A new Supreme Court nominee means another chance to stoke the incendiary debate on the issue of abortion. But for the lawyer wife of Federal Judge John G. Roberts Jr., the matter is clearly settled.
While Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr.'s views on abortion triggered intense debate on Capitol Hill this week, there was no mistaking where his wife stands: Jane Sullivan Roberts, a lawyer, is ardently against abortion.
A Catholic like her husband, Jane Roberts has been deeply involved in the pro-life movement. She lends her name, money and professional advice to a small Washington-based organization - Feminists for Life of America - that offers counseling and educational programs. The group has filed legal briefs before the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of abortion.
A spouse's views normally are not considered relevant in weighing someone's job suitability. But abortion is likely to figure prominently in the Senate debate over Roberts' nomination. And with his position on the divisive issue unclear, abortion rights supporters expressed concern that his wife's views might suggest that he also embraces efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade.
"It's unclear how all this will affect her husband," said Jennifer Palmieri, a spokeswoman with the Center for American Progress, a liberal public policy group. "It's possible that he would have a different view than her. It's just that in the absence of information about this guy, people are looking at her and trying to read the tea leaves."....

Ha! I can't wait to see feminists and other liberals trying to nail Judge Roberts because of his wife's views! How chauvinistic! I thought women were supposed to be independent and have their own careers and views separate from their husbands. Sure worked for Hillary.

Schumer and Kennedy will no doubt demand that Roberts divorce his wife as a condition of being confirmed..
Kerry died? Hey you may not know it but Kerry served in Vietnam.
This makes me SO happy! And I thought she looked kind of mousy.
They will oppose him on the grounds of his "Deeply Held Personal Convictions" and that will touch off a firestorm if they do.
With all due respect to the late senator, he was pretty liberal for a republican and somewhat akin to Specter.
Her views weren't that much different from his.
Its an irony even larger, because he himself was not to fond of John Kerry even back then.
Actually, frumpy was the first word that came to my mind.
They do tend to imply that being pro-life is a bad thing.
(1) He may be a bad Catholic (not a good one like John "I'm a marriage-abandoning pro-abortion member of a secret society Catholic" Kerry).
(2) His wife is definitely a bad Catholic.
(3) His wife publicly opposes abortion.
(4) he provided legal advice to an evil client (the Florida GOP).
Works for me.
I'd say it is safe to say that he was a moderate. County Club Republican, from what I hear.
Of course, that's SEVERAL steps to the right of Teresa.

Good word, but now I realize that what she is is a good old-fashioned Catholic LADY, and I have nothing but respect and high regard for that.
