Nuclear Aid to India: Why would the U.S. want to take this risk?

{snip}The United States has wisely been very cautious about sharing nuclear technology – military or civilian. Just a few months ago, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told The Wall Street Journal that any decision to sell civilian nuclear technology to India would have "quite serious" implications for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

So why did President Bush decide this week to help India build nuclear power plants and import advanced weapons? Certainly, a domestic civilian nuclear power program will aid India's economy and gives the United States another strong ally in the region against Muslim extremism, the emerging military and economic juggernaut in China and the cloaked nuclear intentions of North Korea and Iran. The plan also creates a commercial export market for nuclear technology...{snip}

{snip} This promise to India has the potential to undermine major cornerstones of the non-proliferation treaty. Nuclear power may promote closer India-U.S. relations. But at what cost to arms control?

Oh yeah! The NPT has been SO successful in preventing proliferation of nuclear technology by China to Pakistan, N Korea, Libya, probably Iran and Iraq!/sarcasm

Why is it necessary to curry favor with those who favor curry?

Because curry is the flavor of the world.
No curry, No food. Period!
No food, no work. Period
No work no nukes period.

Hence favour the curry people.

Jokes apart, I don't think USA will lose, rather gain. It is a business tactic of not letting your opponent know your trade secrets.

But then who can trust the US in first pace. They nuked Japan! Right.

So if it falls through I am happy. If not, does not matter! period!

I haven't had curry in years but I remember it well - with Major Greys chutney, and a cold beer.

You can't trust US because we nuked Japan? Doing so ended World War Two and anyway, why would we help India with its own nukes get even more nukes? For protection, of course:

There will soon be an Islamic Bomb somewhere near the Subcontinent. Hindus are targets of Islamo-Fascists just like Western people. Thus, a nuclear India: the enemy of our enemy is our friend.

You can have curry at your closest Indian food joint. In case you are not used to it, ask for the least spicy one. Curries are very tasty, but it depends upon how it is made.

Japan had almost surrendered. Little more effort, it would have, without nukes. Dropping Atom bomb was just an excuse for R&D. Defence equipments need to be field tested time & time again.

However thanx for intention to help India in advancing our nuke tech. Islamic bomb is already there. There is no guarantee to its accuracy & where it shall be dropped.

India has taken `no-first-use' policy in the Parliament. Pakistan has NOT - a conscius decision by Gen Mush. So your logic is very clear.

Except that US should now stop funding terrorists indirectly (Like the Paki-Talibans).

Thanx . .... . . friend (enemy of enemy!)

In a few words, to balance the growing Chinese military hegemony.

The Chinese and Muslims have been bedpartners for a long time, Iran was testing silkworm missiles during the Clinton Administration.

India will eventually be at odds with both the Chinese and the Muslims, and from recent PLA rhetoric, so will we.

They speak English, and have similar capitalistic goals. In the long run, the single superpower model will not last. We are simply not maintaining that edge in numbers, and technology can be stolen, bought, or coppied, reducing any advantage there.

When WWIV cooks off, we'll need some friends. I'd count on India before France....

Since the NIMBY's and 'environmentalists'(communist/luddites) won't let us use our own nuclear plants... At least helping India with our knowledge will allow a large portion of humanity to benefit from the technology.

And to balance the equation Israeland India too. IMO South Africa is close too. I would assume Japan and Germany could convert to weaponization quick too.

Well.. Well.. Well...

Now that is a point. Whenever technology advances, countries or civilisations not having such technologies are bound to follow, especially if they identify its needs.

So tomorrow if Russia or US masters use of laser guns via satellites (Like Star-Wars), countries will show interest. You also need to know that these technologies are not given free-of-cost. More than the actual price of these technologies are taken from the buyer country. This is a Sellers market, not a buyers market.

It also depends upon the global positioning of the country.

India is a country which is a `large' country and is important to the world peace. India has alwasy proved itself by never attacking any country, but by defending itself against attackers whether it is Paksitan or China. If India applied the same policies used by Pakis or the Chinese, then Half of Pakistan & Bangladesh would have been returned to India & also (possibly) Tibet would have been a part of India.

But India does not want unnecessary hassles with neighbours. Being a developing country we have better things to do like economic development. However to keep ourselves safe & to have ourselves heard we need MINIMUM DETERRENT CAPABILITY. You would ask that what is the guarantee India would not use its nukes in offence. Well .... a bill has been passed in the parliament for NO_FIRST_USE. While Pakistan has decided AGAINST IT,. i.e. it reserves the RIGHT TO USE NUKES FOR OFFENCE. So India needs to be DOUBLY CAREFUL RIGHT!

So much for the world Islamic Peace (I_SLAM, U_SLAM, Everybody SLAM_SLAM)

No doubt the genie is out of the bottle. The NPT was/is an attempt to prevent more players on the chessboard. It's failed the mandate and now the UN States will draft to monitor that realm of technology. It the absence of harsh retribution of violations that have cost the NPT.

Yes absolutely! I think that if India is giving a good return to US, it should rather invest its resources & sell to countries like India & Israel, rather than to Pakistan, China, South Africa, etc.

I think Europe has more nuke power to blow itself apart 100 times over. Considering its size, I think it has a poor history of 2 whole world wars.

Lets hope that Eurpoeans don't cry over nukes now for the time being.

Arabians never had a good history, so they are too risky to trust with ANYTHING! yes ANYTHING! the only thing they know is halal! So they are out by their own virtue.

Now asians are left. Mind you asians have borne the brunt of nuclear bombs (Japan) no one else. Yet we are more civilised & restrained.

So morale of the story is help the safe guy become really safe. (:-)
