Gov. Jeb Bush blasted a Florida congressman Friday for suggesting that Supreme Court nominee John Roberts be disqualified because of a brief meeting the governor and Roberts had during the 2000 presidential recount.
An expert in constitutional law then in the private sector, Roberts came to Tallahassee at his own expense to volunteer advice to Bush as the governor's older brother tried to clinch the election over then-Vice President Al Gore.
Rep. Robert Wexler, a Democrat, said that meeting alone should disqualify Roberts.
"Ready, fire, shoot," Bush said Friday when asked about Wexler's statement. "Everything is off the top of his head. He has no idea of what our relationship is."
Bush said Friday that he didn't even remember Roberts when first asked about that 2000 visit earlier in the week.
"It was a very short meeting," Bush recalled, noting there were others in attendance, although he was unsure who they were. "It was not related to politics."
However, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, another Florida Democrat, said Friday she was skeptical about Bush's claims that the half-hour meeting had nothing to do with politics.
"I doubt he brought in John Roberts to advise him on his duties as governor," Wasserman Schultz said.
President Bush was ultimately declared the winner in Florida by 537 votes when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in his favor. The state's 25 electoral votes gave him the victory over Gore.
Now in his second term, President Bush appointed Roberts to the federal bench in 2002 and nominated him Tuesday for the Supreme Court. The Senate must now decide whether to confirm him.
This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard the 'Rats come up with.
But coming from Wexler, it is no surprise at all. This guy routinely made a fool of himself during the Recount battle. Or am I thinking of Deutsch? Or both?
So, all the other 2000 lawyers that worked on this are forever banned from a possible nomination?
Even David Boise(sp) told Alan Colmes that this was absurd.
Robert Wexler is about as dumb as one Jewish Congressman from South Florida can get. He and his "Jewish" supporters will have astonished fears and faces when the Muslim terrorists that Wexler and the Democrat Party abet, slit their throats or slice their heads off. How dumb can some people actually be? Thank God the Jews in Israel and their magnificent IDF get it!!! American Jews are lost in the wilderness, and will pay a dear price for their stupidity!!!

Actually, I think Wexler may be on to something here... Perhaps attorneys who have expressed an interest in or actually participated in politics SHOULD be excluded from public service? :0

Got news for you. Many Jews in Israel don't get it. If they got it, they wouldn't be out there opposing the construction of the fence.
You're right .. because if the nominee was Boies (Gore's lawyer), Wexler would have no difficulty with it.
It's just the typical double standard.
I think maybe he meant to say "Ready, fire, aim."
When Roberts was nominated, they found out that he had spent a day or two in Florida working on Bush v. Gore. Now they seem to think that a case from nearly five years ago which will have absolutely no bearing on any future case somehow means that Roberts is not qualified.
In the real world of "what we do to help ourselves in our jobs when special circumstances arise", I would have to think that having a 1/2 hour meeting with a group of lawyers would be EXACTLY the thing a Governor might do when his state is being overrun with lawyers.
In other words, it makes perfect sense that this meeting happened to help Bush determine what he should do as governor, probably focusing on how NOT to end up in a conflict of interest situation.
Given that Jeb Bush did nothing in the recount, while the democrat attorney general actively supported the Gore position, it seems whatever he heard in this meeting was NOT related to interfering in the recount.

I agree, Jeb Bush went out of his way to pretty much stay out of the recount proceedings. He knew that the only chance his brother would have of getting public support was if he stayed out of it. The 'Rats did everything they could do to drag Jeb into it, but he wouldn't take the bait.
Wexler's problem is that when they circumcized him they cut him back a bit too much, so he has never reached mansize.
