One reason Hindus may frown on Christians is the fact that many Christians eat meat. Meat eating is certainly not a tenet of Christianity; in fact, many of the early Christians and many Christian saints were vegetarians, and in the early days of Christianity there were so many prohibitions on eating meat that less than half the days in the year was it even allowed.

As you well know, eating meat is soundly condemned in classic Hinduism.

Actually, Vedic Hinduism, which is the original root of the religion, has plenty of references to consuming meat, especially beef. Things took a turn toward vegetarianism quite recently, about 600 or so years ago. Shortage of livestock, Muslim invasion, reform movements, all have played a role in this. You'll find plenty of resoures on this with a simple search on the internet.

Most Hindus won't really bother about another person's eating habits as long as it is kept in the private realm & the problem is mainly with beef.Barring Muslim functions, most other meats are served & consumed by other religious groups(including Hindus). The only exception to this are folks who belong to the fundamentalist fringe like the RSS/VHP & some states like Gujarat & Madhya Pradesh -for eg,many flights to Gujarat, inc. private operators serve all vegetarian meals so as to not "offend" sensibilities.

"One reason Hindus may frown on Christians is the fact that many Christians eat meat"

Thanks for your earlier logical post. This statement, however, I must correct. Many "Hindus" eat meat. It depends on the part of the country - Bengalis for example eat fish. Kashmiri Pandits eat meat.

The reasons "Hindus" frown on Christianity

1. Christianity states "my way is the only way" i.e. through Jesus. That is anathema to "Hindus" who feel that there are many ways to God. For example, the four essential paths to salvation are Karma Yoga (action), Gnyan Yoga (Knowledge), Bhakti Yoga (devotion) and Prem Yoga (love). Even in Bhakti Yoga, there are many many "gods". Thus there is a very direct and simple conflict between the two.

2. Christianity has commandments such as "thou shall make no graven image of me" which goes against the idolatary mindset of "Hindus". For a "Hindu", not not have an idol of Ganesh, Krishna, etc would be as bad as eating beef.

3. Christianity is not an "Indian" religion. For the most part, "Indian" religions such as Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, etc are treated with respect. There is a ethos that comes through in these "Indian" religions that is absent in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The ethos is a common concept of Dharam, Karma, Soul, reincarnation, etc

There are more, but I think I'll stop here.
cheers
