Yes, I saw that article, and thought it very sad... being a Southerner, I'm accustomed to being painted with the broad, intolerant brush of "racism, homophobia," and the usual memes the Left flings out at people they disagree with, and I generally ignore such blatherings.
I'm a live & let live kind of guy, and think that generally, what goes on between consenting adults ( not kids, mind you ) and in private, is none of my business.
Hell, the island I grew up on was about one-third black folks, mostly descendants of the old, great cotton plantations that were there before the Civil War, and consider myself fortunate that we lacked the racism you sometimes saw elsewhere, because, as my Mom used to say, "you don't act that way toward your neighbors!"
