IHMO, the fighting will continue for a long time. We need to encourage and help establish democracy and implement social/diplomatic solutions while we're fighting.

You're right. there is a very "PC" feel about this. We ARE at war right now .. in two countries..I can just imagine what this is devolving to..
I'll know we're really serious when the phrase "War on Islam" is not only used but practiced on all fronts- until then, we're just pissin' up a limp rope.

however, the fighting still rages on. Although they have declared the end to major ops, there is still stuff going on in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
The Idea is to show that there is a continuity plan for when we are pulling out of Iraq and Afghanistan.
This is what will be used to shut the liberals up when they say the WH has no plans for post war Iraq.
Well, I always thought calling it the WOT was stupid, akin to calling WWII "The War on Blitzkrieg". OTOH, "Global Sruggle Against Violent Extremism" just obscures the issue more. It's a war against militant Islam. Let's call a spade a spade.
GWB's probably getting tired of trying to sell his WOT with 10,000 people streaming across our borders each week unaccounted for.......
We are in a war in more than two countries. We have forces....uniformed and not...in many nations. We are fighting these long bearded smelly ones on more fronts than WWII. And here at home. I'll repeat....

Actually this is a slight improvement over the "war on terror" in my opinion. This was never a war on terror; this is a war against a violent, extremist form of Islam - a political movement with geopolitical goals that run counter to our own. Now, all the White House needs to do is put "Islamic" before "extremism" in their new mission statement and that will it will be pretty much right on the mark.

I noticed something odd this weekend on the talking head shows...when speaking about the funding, training, and teaching of terrorism everyone seemed to focus on Pakistan.
Nobody mentioned Saudi Arabia in same way.
It is though the Saudis' are now immune.

It sure would have been nice if the administration had pandered to the voters who elected them 8 months ago before starting this crap.
To name one. McCain and Lindy Ham...crying about the treatment of terrorists as though our enemy is going to abide by the Geneva Conventions should they catch our forces. WHAT ARE THEY SMOKING....KENNEDY CIGARS?

While I don't agree with changing the name (foolishness) - the reality is on the ground nothing changes -
Hillary will not get in the WH over this - She will not be in the WH period (the ONLY thing that brings her there is immigration via a third party candidate - and that is still a long shot).
