Mr. Davies should be glad he didn't encounter this retired NFLer instead:

Hipple was usually good. Good enough to help get them to the playoffs at times.

Along with a good defense.

Billy Simms was the man.

With Sanders following, Simms doesn't get the credit he deserved.

He had a couple of big games. The most memorable was in the mid-80's when the won a Thanksgiving Day game against Dallas. Don't remember the year. That had to be his highlight. The cool thing about him was that no matter how bad they got beat week after week, he was always a good-natured crack-up in interviews. Think he got that from Gary Danielson.

Oct. 19, 1981 - Detroit's first Monday Night football appearance since 1975 was also the debut of second year quarterback Eric Hipple as a starter. Hipple responded magnificently as the Lions, playing without an injured Billy Sims, routed the Chicago Bears, 48-17, for Detroit's highest points total since 1957. Hipple completed 14-of-25 for 36 yards and four touchdowns, including a 94-yarder to Leonard Thompson -- the third longest in team history. As it turned out Hipple accounted for all six Detroit touchdowns and led the club to 485 yards in total offense.

Simms was definitely fun to watch.

That was another big game for him. Maybe my memory is failing, but I do seem to remember a Hipple win against the Cowboys - last second field goal and the Lions had 12 guys on the field on the last play.
