Brawl at Chuck E. Cheese's leads to gun, drug charges

BY NOAH HAGLUND
Of The Post and Courier Staff

While at the Chuck E. Cheese's in North Charleston to break up a fight between unruly patrons, police confiscated two pistols and 25 grams of crack from a car in the parking lot, according to North Charleston police.

A manager called police to report that a baby's birthday party had turned into a brawl at about 7:50 p.m. Sunday, a police report states. When officers arrived at the family-oriented chain restaurant on Rivers Avenue, the 18-year-old mother said her ex-boyfriend, a 14-year-old, came into the restaurant and began arguing with Ranardo Valdez Wright, 21, of North Charleston.

At one point, the report states, Wright was walking on tables and punching people. During the fracas, DeShawn Rodney Broughton, 19, of North Charleston, went to the parking lot, saying he was going to get a pistol, the report states.

Leslie Broughton, 31, of North Charleston, who was sitting in a Saturn with the man, told the police they could search the car, the report states. Inside the glove box, they found $318 in cash and plastic bags containing 25 grams of a substance that field-tested positive for crack cocaine and other bags with 4 grams of a substance that tested positive for cocaine.

Under the front passenger's seat, officers found a .38-caliber Interarms handgun. Under the driver's seat, they found a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson, the police report said.

DeShawn Broughton was charged with trafficking in cocaine base, possession of cocaine and illegal possession of a pistol for someone younger than 21, the report states. He remained in jail Tuesday after bail was set at $60,000, according to the Charleston County Detention Center.

Leslie Broughton was charged with trafficking cocaine base, the report states. She was still awaiting a bail hearing Tuesday, according to the jail, which also listed a charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Also cited were Rashad Banks, 18, of Summerville, and Wright, both with public disorderly conduct, the report states. The 14-year-old was released to his stepfather on a custodial promise, the report states.

A Chuck E. Cheese's manager said, "Nobody in this building is allowed to talk about it."

I've only been to Chuck E. Cheese's once for one of our grandkids' birthday party. Once was quite enough, thank you. Wall to wall screaming kids ain't my idea of fun.

A friend's son is on the North Charleston police force. I can't wait to hear his report on this episode.

You want prisoner abuse? Threaten detainees at Gitmo with being sent to Chuck E. Cheese for their lunch.

Hmm....would it be "Un P.C." to point out that maybe...MAYBE there is some sort of pattern here? If I could ONLY put my FINGER on it...

Was the mother back at Chuck E. Cheese's to pick up a new younger boyfriend? Do ya think they met there?

I went to a party at one of these place once about 12 years ago. I will never set foot in one again.

When my daughter was 2, we went to a party at one. She got lost in the Toddler Habitrail and began to have a meltdown. One of the slimmer employees was dispatched to go in and lead her to safety.

She still won't talk about it.

When drugs are criminalized, only criminals deal drugs ... and they make a tidy sum doing it, just like during Prohibition.
