The suspect was being taken from Redford to the Livingston County Jail on an outstanding warrant by a Hamburg Township police officer when he complained of feeling ill and began spitting on the back of the patrol car as if vomiting, said Lt. Brian DeNoyer of the Hamburg Township Police.
The officer lowered the rear passenger window to give the suspect fresh air and the man positioned himself on the rear door and jumped headfirst into the westbound lanes of I-96 at about 1:45 p.m.
DeNoyer said the man unfastened his belt and maneuvered his handcuffs from behind his back to his lap. The officer slowed the vehicle as the man began squeezing through the 8-inch opening in the window and came to a complete stop in the middle lane immediately after he jumped.
The female officer, who celebrated her seven-year anniversary with the department earlier in the day, applied first aid to the suspect while calling for backup, and diverted oncoming traffic around the injured man, DeNoyer said.
Remarkably, the suspect was not struck by another vehicle after he jumped, but he suffered injuries to his face, arms and legs. He was transported to the University of Michigan Medical Centers by Livingston County Ambulance and was in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries Wednesday evening, DeNoyer said.
Authorities closed down a portion of the expressway at Spencer Road, just west of the US-23 interchange, until about 4:30 p.m., officials with the Michigan State Police said.
The man is a suspect in a recent auto theft in Hamburg and will likely face additional felony charges for the attempted escape upon arraignment, DeNoyer said. The suspect was expected to remain hospitalized overnight.
"This doesn't happen every day ... but he was desperate, and desperate times call for desperate measures. I guess he thought the risk was worth it,'' DeNoyer said.
The officer was shaken by the incident but remained on duty Wednesday, and will continue to work while state troopers from the Brighton Post investigate the incident, he added.
Darwin award candidate if he tries a little harder next time.

Watch for a lawsuit against the cop for negligence
No doubt she was looking for extra vacation - suspended with pay. No down side risk just an extra perk for government employees.

Got through an 8 inch gap?!? The popular meth diet must have been working well
The cop should have just rolled the window back up on him and kept going.
