Windows Vista release slips to Q4 2006

Windows Vista won’t be available for shipment until the last quarter of 2006, a Microsoft Corp. executive let slip in a presentation on Microsoft’s campus Thursday.

Microsoft had previously slated the release of the next client version of it Windows operating system (OS) for the second half of 2006. But at the Microsoft Financial Analyst Conference in Redmond, Washington, Thursday, Will Poole, senior vice president of the client division of Microsoft, said the OS would not be available until the 2006 “holiday” time frame in the U.S.

This presumably would mean that the OS will not be available until sometime around the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, which is the last Thursday in November, or Christmas, which is Dec. 25.

Poole quickly corrected his faux pas, and reiterated Microsoft’s party line that Windows Vista will be ready sometime in the second half of 2006 during the remainder of his presentation to analysts.

Microsoft released the first beta of Windows Vista Wednesday, and Thursday at the analyst conference showed a demo of some of Vista’s new features, including virtual folders and enhanced support for RSS (Really Simple Syndication).

The company unveiled the official name of the client OS, formerly code-named Longhorn, last Friday at its annual sales meeting. The next version of Windows Server, however, still retains the Longhorn code name, and is expected to be available in 2007.

For consistent naming purposes it will be called Windows 2005.

so is the "holiday" time frame not in the second half of the year?

That's still long enough away for it to be pushed back to Q3 2007.

The software told me I needed Windows 98 or better, so I went out and bought a Mac.

Maybe they should have left it "Longhorn". Gave a whole new meaning to "long".

From the screenshots of the Beta, lets hope it slips even further. I've never seen a more confusing, cluttered interface.

Someone on Slashdot suggested that 'Vista' would eventually be shortened to VI which is the next version of Windows (6). With the XP moniker, I assumed they would be dropping the yearly labels.

Why am I not surprised? Now it'll be out after the release of Apple's OS X 10.5 ("Leopard") and be even further behind.

However, I have to give MS props on the extensive beta testing. Maybe for the first time a new version of Windows will actually be usable before SP1.

Ha ha ha... I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot of these. In some other news, I heard Microsoft was developing it's own distribution of Linux. If Microsoft would make a Linux distro it would be less stable (on purpose), lack all kinds of compatibility so your enterprise applications will not run on it, and be completely incompatible with your current MS documents.

Anyone know what the underpinnings are of Longhorn / Vista? Is it UNIX based or still M/S proprietary?

I've run Linux on boxes for several years now, but I've stayed away from the "fancy" desktops like Gnome and KDE. I finally loaded up Gnome 2.10 and was blown away at how good it was.

Is it me or does it sorta look like the Mac OS?

BTW, since SP2 XP has been running great for me... Now if I could say the same for my Dell... :-(
