So what if it costs several grand. It's for the children!
...shall do, from Kentucky.
Most American gun makers are including a trigger lock with every gun now, and have been for several years.
You can buy a trigger lock at Walmart for a couple of bucks, so I doubt that the manufacturers are paying even that much for the ones they throw in with every gun they ship. This amendment was just a sop thrown to the antis so they can go back home to their anti-gun blue states and crow about how they stood up to the despicable gun lobby.
The important thing is that this bill will save the American gunmaking industry from being driven into bankruptcy and out of the gunmaking business by lawsuits designed solely for that purpose. If it takes raising the price of a $500 gun by $5 or so it will be well worth it if that's what it takes to get it passed.
But having said that, that amendment is where Frist should draw the line and say that no more amendments will be considered.
Democrats did succeed in adding an amendment to require child safety locks to be purchased with every handgun, except those bought by government officials and police officers.
Any violation could be punished by the suspension of the dealer's license, a $10,000 fine or both.
This "amendment" gives State and Fed. "enforcement" a new lever to pry gun dealers away from their freedom.
MOST new handguns now come with locks, most used ones do not, the amendment states "Every handgun", so a dealer is faced with a $10,000 fine and loss of their business if they forget to add a lock EVEN ONE TIME!
The anti's will seize on anything they can, if this "amendment" remains in the final version you can look forward to anti's with hidden cameras busily entrapping dealers!
Hey, it doesn't say we have to use the "child safety locks". And because of some state laws, most handguns come with an integrated lock, anyway, which I don't use often - just when I have to lock it in my car.
Good news.
