Herndon Confronts Immigrant Tensions Proposal to Fund Day Laborer Center A Test in Integration
By David Cho Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, July 18, 2005; Page A01
The throng of Latino immigrants gathering outside the 7-Eleven in downtown Herndon looking for a day's work has been the most noticeable part of this commercial district of shopping plazas and fast-food restaurants for almost a decade.
For as long as they've been there, the newcomers, many of them in the country illegally, have been at the center of ethnic and racial tensions simmering among Herndon's rapidly dwindling white majority and even among legal immigrants living in town.
At last week's public hearing on Herndon's plan for a staffed day laborer site, some opponents wore these pins. At last week's public hearing on Herndon's plan for a staffed day laborer site, some opponents wore these pins.
But now, as town officials consider a plan to spend about $170,000 in taxpayer money to move the workers to a designated site in a residential neighborhood and staff it with social workers and English tutors, those emotions are exploding into the open...

Herndon Confronts Immigrant Tensions
Proposal to Fund Day Laborer Center A Test in Integration
'"It's not important whether we have [immigration] papers or not. It's what we do and who we are as people."'
says an illegal man from Peru.
that's right, we should care for them andpay for them and not enforce do not loiter laws because it is who they are as people.../s
Everyone, go read the whole article.
ping
"We are qualified hands," he said in Spanish. "It's not important whether we have [immigration] papers or not. It's what we do and who we are as people."
Read as: "It does not matter that we have broken federal laws repeatedly and intentionally. What reeeeeealy matters is that, aside from all the criminal stuff... I mean, the criminal stuff and the sense of entitlement... Sorry, I mean, uh, aside from the criminal stuff, wrongful sense of entitlement, and complete disrespect for the lawful citizens and legal immigrants of this country, we are really a super bunch of people."
Spoken in Spanish, of course.
Tar - feathers - rail - out of town...
Has anyone been to the 7-11 on Little River Turnpike in Annandale, westbound past Northen Va Community college lately?? (beside the McDonalds)
Holey mackeral, thought I went through a time warp or something. Gotta be 600-800 of them all hanging out at the 7-11, McDdonalds, Mobil station, and the 5-6 buildings there. Same scene everyday. I can't believe this is allowed. Its like a mini-city. I think I'll drive through there with a camera one day and film it all and send it to the hill.
I feel sorry for the people of this town. They will not win. Their town will be destroyed like many, many towns before theirs. I'd advise them to sell and get out now, before their houses are worth less, their schools are completely ruined, and they are terrified to go outside.
Jones' daughter was harrassed by the (illegal) day laborers; but when he complains about it the Mayor says he's engaging in a show of hatred?
Actually, I believe it's more along the lines of a display of the kind of public outrage that sends criminals to prison, for crying out loud!
Actually Eastbound, not westbound
Maddening, isn't it?
And that, Nea....is sad. I agree with you, but dang, WE are to move because we're being taken over? I know I'm preaching to the choir...
The median income for a household in the town is $72,912, and the median income for a family is $79,140. Males have a median income of $44,197 versus $35,548 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,941. 8.1% of the population and 4.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.1% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,655 people, 6,962 households, and 4,970 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,981.3/km² (5,129.9/mi²). There are 7,190 housing units at an average density of 657.8/km² (1,703.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 57.89% White, 9.51% African American, 0.42% Native American, 13.86% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 12.95% from other races, and 5.32% from two or more races. 26.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
I've seen the article and been to the 7/11. You can see the same thing many other places around the northern va area. Herndon is trying to move this just over the border into loudoun with their proposal.
Moving away is just what white people do whenever blacks/illegals move in. It was the same 30 years ago and hasn't changed since.
You mean of course that this be applied to our non-responsive public officials.
With all due respect this is absolutely wrong. Why give in? - Why give up? Why not expose it and do something about it? It's an opportunity, an opportunity to make a difference.
Unless they want more to come, they better stop enabling and appeasing these criminals.
And most of the people hiring them are Koreans, from what I understand.
