Kennebunkport, Maine, residents say that when the Bushes are golfing security makes getting around a hassle. (AP file photo)

People in the Bush family's summer haven of Kennebunkport, Maine, have a message for locals in Gov. Mitt Romney's vacation spot, Wolfeboro, N.H.: Things are only going to get worse.

Romney and his posse have already been deemed an unwanted distraction by some in the Lake Winnipesaukee town, but Kennebunkport locals say the Granite Staters are in for a major shock if the governor's 2008 presidential bid takes off.

Mitt's not a bad neighbor, though: "Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney interrupted a quiet vacation to help rescue six people and a dog from a sinking boat in Lake Winnipesaukee over the weekend." July, 2003

I'm a Mainer, the only folks you here complaining about the Bush Family are your prototypical Bush-hating Dems from the Commonwealth with Summer places on the Coast.

Yea, there are a few Dem-by-birth locals that hate Bush as well, but aren't smart enough to tell you -why-.

On a serious note:

With one fomer President calling Maine home, and the President calling Maine his summer home, we are still loosing all of our US Military presence. That has got to tell you how bad our two so called Republican senators are.

Every presidential candidate has to be from somewhere in the USA (Kerry being the exception).

During the 1988 campaign, I worked at a Fixed Base Operator on Houston's Hobby Airport. Various candidates would stop there, park their airplanes, and never buy a drop of fuel. Dukakis and Bentsen made one joint appearance and left - no effect on traffic. Bush 41 made one stop at Ellington AFB - no effect on traffic. Quayle made a morning stop at Hobby - no effect on traffic. Bentsen came every Friday at 3:30 PM, parked a 737 on our ramp (all other aircraft restricted from using our ramp). Then they would close the freeways between Hobby and Bentsen's hotel. Every Friday during afternoon rush hour - traffic would be snarled for the Bentson's six car motorcade.

I would get home from work at 7:00 PM. Guess who I voted for.

I grew up in Kennebunkport during the 80's while Bush Sr. was still Veep. As far as I recall, most everyone was pretty proud to have such a famous and powerful person living "just down the street". I remember he'd show up at the Cape Porpoise hardware store and often give speeches around town. My dad even got to treat GHWB's mother (an ER visit I believe) -- he saved the check from that one. :-) Despite the lack of accent, I always got the impression that GHWB and fam was considered part of the community and not outsiders that we wanted to drive out of town.
