23 hours total travel time back to the West Coast is a real negative.Man oh man, I hear ya.
I've done flights like that about 20 or 25 times, living in places like, Perth, AU, Jakarta, IN, Kula Lumpur, Malaysia, Auckland NZ.
Never got use to the jetlag.

Now that we own Central America (thanks to CAFTA), there'll be plenty of opportunities to retire there.

Lots of mountain properties in golf communities. You can own several, hire a management company to rent it out to Atlanta golfers, and at least break even while the values appreciate.

these people are gonna feel real stupid when that nice village they bought for their retirement in some god forsaken 3rd world country is claimed by the local socialist government for redistribution like in rowanda.

The local health care is excellent. Many of the Physicians speak English and the country has become sort of a health tourist spot for orthopedic, cosmetic and lasic surgery. I have had the misfortune of having to be hospitalized there and the care was excellent (the endocrinologist I saw was a product of UC Davis). The cost at private hospitals is a fraction of what it is in USA. A private room was US$32 a night and my total bill was about what my deductible would be in the USA. Go to the web sight in my first post and you can get an Idea of prices.
In general, food borne or mosquito borne diseases are not a concern. The AIDs situation is of concern but not to us (the sex trade and young men in the military are the big at risk groups -- also middle aged men who stray and their wives). It is heterosexually transmitted.

If any American makes the move to a 3rd worldish country pretend you're a dirt poor ex-missionary otherwise you'll become possible ransom material.

Me, I'm hoping for a real estate bust in the SF Bay area. I love wine country, fog, the connections with film noir, and all the great Asian restaraunts. Besides the leftists there will be a perpetual source of amusement.) Couldn't agree more. As I get older, I want good weather, and I want it year round. That's why I stay in California.
Either way, mediterranean climate is the way to go in old age.
I am in Southern Cal, not to far from the coast. Every time we think about moving, we go and visit, on the way back, each time we are shaking our heads, no way!

It reflects the increasing access to travel more than anything else. We could count on you giving the positive spin to it.

obscene US tax code that follows youWill you explain this? I've often thought of hightailing it to another country but I never gave it any thought of Uncle Sam following me and screwing with the money I do have.

The people who are retiring to foreign countries are obviously not gun owners, because the United States is the only place left in the world that does not border-to-border draconian restrictions on the ownership of firearms (blue states excepted).
So I say let all of them go live in foreign countries. It will make more room for the rest of us to build shooting ranges, and we won't have a bunch of gun haters whining about the noise!:>)

Several Muslim countries allow gun onwership and in some carrying them aroung (including AKs).

Yeah, I know, but there is no way I would live in one of those places.

Medicare takes about $60 a month out of the social security check and MediGap costs less than $200 per month. Property taxes cost me $400 a month, even if my income is zero.
Do you hate America?
