Though I agree with your sentiment, you (and she) are assuming "facts not in evidence."

We can't know what purpose He might be serving by this.

Maybe He's telling people not to gamble? Not to trust the government? Not to scratch off your tickets while driving?

Seriously, I never try to out guess God.

Now, if he did have a hand in this, I seriously doubt it was just because He "has a really strange sense of humor."
