(MPLS Star & Sickle)Editorial: Congress should prohibit cruelty, torture
MPLS Star & Sickle ^ | 8-2-05 | editors

Three military veterans in the Senate -- one a Vietnam POW, one a military lawyer, one a veteran of both World War II and Korea, and all Republicans in good standing -- want Congress to prohibit the "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment" of all people detained by the U.S. military, no matter what their status. The Bush administration has threatened to veto their effort. Here are 10 reasons the bill Sens. John McCain, John Warner and Lindsay Graham are championing deserves support, and why the White House is wrong to oppose it:

• It is ludicrous on its face to argue, as the White House does, that prohibiting cruelty usurps presidential authority. Nothing in the Constitution or federal law gives the president such authority in the first place.

and once barking dogs and panties on the head are considered 'torture', they might have a legitimate argument.

Perhaps the best way to alleviate the cruelty and torture accusations is to shoot them on site so they won't "suffer."

God forbid we "degrade" murderers who are trying to kill us.

We definitely need a Terrorist Protection Bill.

One has to ask one's self, "If this law is passed, who gains?"

Do we earn bonus points from our European allies? No, they'll still be anti-American.

Will we get a gold star from the Muslim community? No, we'll look weak.

Will this somehow insure that no American, civilian or military, will be beheaded by the Islamists? No, they'll still hate us.

Will it make Democrats in the Senate feel more warmly toward Republicans in the Senate? For about ten seconds. Maybe...

Will this earn McCain, et al, a bunch of "Attaboys" from the MSM? Well, yes, it probably will.

By a process of elimination, I believe we have arrived at the real, underlying reason for this initiative...

Congress should also prohibit propaganda that serves as an incitement to the enemy to attack our troops.

Make it a capital crime too!

McCain, John Warner and Lindsay Graham

The voices of defeat within the republican party. Possibly they believe that by making the world a safer place for islamofascist terrorism, they will be the last to have their throats cut.

Actually McCain and a number of other repubs have been paid lobbyists/lapdogs of islamo terrorists for quite some time. McCain was one of the "loudest" supporters of the clintoon war of aggression against Yugoslavia during the 90's. In 1999, McCain was pressuring clintoon to use ground troops in Kosovo while receiving payoff $$$'s from KLA.
