Poland condemns attack on children as “banditry, hooliganism”

WARSAW, August 1 (Itar-Tass) -- The Polish Foreign Ministry condemned Sunday’s attack on children of Russian diplomats in Warsaw as “a deplorable act of banditry and hooliganism”.

“We interpret this incident as being totally free from political or international aspects and think that this is an act of banditry and hooliganism,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Aleksander Checko said on Monday.

He said the attack was accidental. “What happened should not be connected in any way with any political action against the Russian Federation.”

“We made it clear to Russian diplomats that we will do everything on our part to find and punish those responsible for what they did,” Checko said.

The Foreign Ministry relayed Russian diplomats’ request for increased security of Russian embassy personnel to relevant Polish services.

The Polish side will inform Russian diplomats about all news concerning Sunday’s incident, Checko said.

Interior Minister Ryszard Kalisz ordered Warsaw police chief Ryszard Sewerski to investigate the incident.

According to Kalisz’ order, Polish police chief Leszek Szreder will personally oversee the investigation.

Polish authorities will also consider the possibility of increasing security at the Russian embassy and consulate, Interior Ministry spokesman Marek Georgica said.
