Iran is shipping more powerful and sophisticated military-caliber bombs to Iraqi guerrillas for use against U.S.-led coalition forces, NBC News reported yesterday.
Citing U.S. military and intelligence officials, the network said U.S. soldiers intercepted a large shipment of high explosives last week, smuggled into northeastern Iraq from Iran.
"The officials say the shipment contained dozens of 'shaped charges' manufactured recently. Shaped charges are especially lethal because they're designed to concentrate and direct a more powerful blast into a small area," NBC reported.
"They'll go right through a very heavily armored vehicle like an M1-A1 tank from one side right out the other side," retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey told the network.
Military officials said insurgents in Iraq began using shaped charges to kill U.S. forces three months ago. Recent weeks have brought a spate of deadlier roadside-bomb attacks on U.S. forces.
In one attack earlier this week, 14 U.S. Marines were killed inside a 28-ton armored vehicle that would be immune from most improvised explosive devices, but vulnerable to shaped charges, which were developed by militaries worldwide specifically to pierce armor.

Time to return to sender, a shaped charge of our own. I like the shape of a MOAB.
It is hard for me to believe that an external explosive could penetrate an M-1 from one side to the other. OTOH if this is true I can see the WOT expanding a little to the east of Baghdad.
Time to put an end to Iran's reign of terror.

Religion of peace my arse BUMP!
Looks like it's time to move 70% of our forces to the border regions of Iraq and focus on stopping the flow of foreign fighters and explosives into Iraq. Let the Iraqis handle the insurgents who are already in the country. If we choke off the flow of men and material, the insurgency will die.
I kind of like the shape of this charge. Gen. McCaffery might say "It'll go right through a very militant Islamic country like an Iran from one side right out the other side." It's got "Welcome to Paradise" written all over it.
Intelligence officials believe the explosives were shipped into Iraq by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard or the terrorist group Hezbollah . . .
I'm wondering to which group(s) of Iraqi guerrillas the explosives were shipped. Not a stretch for me to believe Iran is studying us and playing much the same kind of role we played against the Soviets in Afghanistan. Just who are they supporting and why?
But, the reference to Hezbollah is . . . for me . . . puzzling. What's the payoff for them?
Simple, they want us out of the area, as long as we are in Iraq and Afghanistan we pose a real threat to Iran. They are playing to the emotions of the dummies. GW will be gone in three years and the 06 election is drawing close. They are hoping to influence these elections.
Per a NYTimes article:
"Bomb-making techniques used by the anti-Israeli militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon have increasingly begun appearing in roadside bombs in Iraq. A senior American commander said bombs using shaped charges closely matched the bombs that Hezbollah used against Israel.
"Our assessment is that they are probably going off to school" to learn how to make bombs that can destroy armored vehicles, the officer said."
The NBC report says the bombs "most likely" with the consent of Iran. What kind of reporting is that? Most likely, wheres the proof ?
Attach a detonator to the entire shipment and return it to the sender, NOW!!!!!!!!!!
I've had it with 'em.
Time to tell these yahoos that either this stops PRONTO or they're next. If they snort.........just say "Hey, have two words for ya: Saddam Hussein."
"Our assessment is that they are probably going off to school" to learn how to make bombs that can destroy armored vehicles, the officer said."
Smells right to me.
Wonder what schooling we're getting, though.
The U.S. Army has a Lessons Learned program stretching back to at least WWII. Wonder what they might have publicly available?
IN early 1997, Lawrence Livermore successfully tested a shaped charge that penetrated 3.4 meters of high-strength armor steel.
Be Seeing You,
Chris
If they are using the type of charges mentioned in that article it is definately state sponsored. To penetrate over ten feet of armor steel is quite a fete in itself. Not something Achmed the camel jockey could assemble.
