WASHINGTON (Army News Service, August 4, 2005) – A pair of female Army captains temporarily traded in their camouflage uniforms and combat boots for evening gowns and high heels and entered and won each of their state beauty pageants.

First Calvary Division company commander Jeannie Deakyne and Army Reserve Capt. Rose Lopez-Keravuori, both competing in their first pageants, claimed the “Mrs.” crowns.

Deakyne, who applied for the Mrs. Texas International pageant while deployed in Taji, Iraq, won the competition May 22, while Lopez-Keravuori was named Mrs. Virginia America May 1. According to the contestants, it was the first time two Army officers were named state beauty pageant winners the same year.

“I think it’s great,” said Lopez-Keravuori, a West Point graduate who is now a military-intelligence consultant for a private, contracted firm. “It shows that you can be an Army captain, go to Iraq, like Jeannie did, and still come back and do a pageant, speak in public and look good.”

You are comparing apples and oranges. There is down time in the military---it's called private lives. What are you so angry about???

How many warriors won't enlist because they don't want to be part of a liberal social experiment?

Their loss, then.

I think Elaine would have something to say about her hairstyle. Anyway, congratulations to those Army gals.

Link to a gallery of Mrs. Virginia ... less my style, but still an attractive lady, especially for a WOOP.

And if I read their Bios correctly, both have done their fair share of time with deployed units.

Some of the best pilots in the service are cutting tours with the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds - recruiting and PR are an important part of the mission stateside. I have no problem with the Army giving these ladies time to pursue activities that will generate free publicity and cast the US Army in a positive light.

Nothing enrages some FReepers more than hearing about a woman in uniform. Thank you for your service, chick.

No, ours. Fighting men will always be better than beauty queens in making war.

Sometimes, it gets real easy to see way nations fall. They get so arrogant they believe nothing can touch them, and pretty soon everything can.

I was proud to serve. I don't care if it ticks anyone off that I did, either. :)

Then again, I was a desk jockey (and a squid!), so I doubt anyone here would be bothered much by that, lol.

Depends. I've seen some men that were pretty much useless lumps, even though they loved to scrap.

Just because these women are attractive enought to win a beauty pageant doesn't mean they are ineffective soldiers. Besides, when was the last time a woman was assigned to a combat unit? (Excepting pilots, here)

Oh yeah, that's right. They AREN'T, and most women aren't interested in combat billets. We'll defend ourselves and our fellows if we need to, but most of us aren't too interested in being GI Jane, and the Pentagon knows that.

Anyway, I'm quite sure that this is a topic on which we will have to agree to disagree.

How many Good Soldiers will possibly die or get wounded because these 2 were out persuing "Crowns" instead of training themselves

The Army lets a lot of soldiers go to do other things rather than their regular duty if the Army believes it will result in good PR and/or morale. Usually it's in sports such as the Olympics and various other competitions at all levels. Those are sanctioned by the Army, but I don't know if this was sanctioned or if they just did it while on leave.

Undoubtedly. I have a problem with anyone taking up or being given a role they have no intention of fulfilling. Women pretending they can do the same physical jobs as men just get people killed.
