UN spokesman: US Should let Iranian president in -- US may deny visa for Iran leader's UN address

The Bush administration is considering taking the unprecedented step of preventing a visting head of state from addressing the United Nations in New York by denying a visa to Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad, Iran's new elected conservative president.

Officials said a decision rested on investigations into whether Mr Ahmadi-Nejad was involved in the 1979 US embassy hostage crisis and the killing of an Iranian-Kurdish dissident leader in Vienna in 1989. Iran denies his involvement in either event.

A top Iranian official confirmed Thursday that Mr Ahmadi-Nejad, who took office on Wednesday, planned to address the UN Millennium Summit and its annual General Assembly next month. Ahmadi-Nejad’s visa application was submitted on Thursday, the Iranian official said.

The trip would be “mutually beneficial to the US and Iran”, the official added.

A White House official said that visa applications were confidential under US law and therefore he could not comment on the outcome. Asked if the president’s alleged involvement in the 444-day-long embassy hostage crisis, if proven, would be sufficient reason to deny him a visa, the US official replied: “That is something we are looking at.”

A US official who asked to remain anonymous said agencies were examining whether there was sufficient evidence to deny a visa and how this would be justified under international law.

Stephane Dujarric, UN spokesman, said: “The host country agreement calls on the US not to impose any impediment to the travel to the UN of any representative of a member state on official business.”

Yasser Arafat, Palestine Liberation Organisation chairman, was denied entry in 1988. He addressed the UN in Geneva. Mohammad Khatami, Iran's previous president, spoke at the UN several times, most notably just weeks after the September 2001 attacks, which he condemned.

Former US diplomats allege they recognise Mr Ahmadi-Nejad as one of their captors, but the Central Intelligence Agency has found no confirmation of this.

How about if we get some bulldozers and wreckers and give the UN a 1 way ticket into the Atlantic Ocean?

Good for them. We should not allow terrorist to address the UN.. Oops, looks like Arafat already did. Maybe we should just arrest the guy and put him in jail and hold him for say, a year like they did the American hostages.

Yes, I am being slightly sarcastic - but this guy is a terrorist plain and simple.

Let him in, then immediately arrest his ass and charge him with an act of war against the US. Then hang him publicly.

We should hold him captive for 700 days or whatever it was.

Do a few fake executions.

Let the former hostages he took spit on him.

If they know he was in charge or part of the hostage taking at the embassy, hell no he shouldn't be allowed in. If so, he should be arrested the moment he touched down on American soil.

I guess we are no longer suitable as a host. Take your parasite body to another host.

He's doing this so soon after becoming president in order to test our resolve. If we cave, he will know we are weak. He will then be able to press on in other areas of interest. If we stand firm, then he may need to scale back on some of his anticipated provacations.

If the US government denies him an entry permit, it is a big blow to the reputation of the Mullahs' regime through out the world

Wouldn't it be interesting to see some worthy news outlet (is that an oxymoron?) do a story revisiting the events of the hostage crisis?

I think it is relevant, given the fact that many, many people think this new president was in some supervisory role while the hostages were being kept, and SIX of the hostages now say that Ahmadinejad was there.

I also think it might help idiots realize that this little annoyance they call terrorism has been going on for decades.

Not to mention the fact that the information about this guy proves that not only is Islam a violent way of life (why do you think so many convicts convert to it while in prison?), but that it is not just fringe lunatic extremists who hold this view. This guy is the president, for God's sake.

You bet you can come in ONLY AFTER:

That there will be NO DIPLOMATIC STATUE for you;

You quit your nuke program and let us in to inspect;

You take your terrorists out of Iraq so they don't kill our soldiers;

You tell Syria to do the same thing;

Then you send back ALL the money and goodies we have sent you over the years;

If you can do all this, then you may enter our Home Land UNDER GUARD by OUR people ALL THE TIME your here....and if you or the U.N. don't like these rules, then you go sc--- yourself and take the U.N. with you since YOUR ALL a bunch of terrorists!

Let's give him a normal tourist visa and arrest him for his crimes when he arrives.
