Seriously, I don't care so much about the Chief,...

Well, I do. Ever notice the mascot for Hawaii? He's the "warrior" and is dressed in native Hawaiian garb, and prances and mugs in the most outrageous fashion. He is evidently exempt from any consideration of offensiveness. The reason is obvious. They are "really" Hawaiians - really natives - and they are authentic. I find this whole setup outrageously offensive. Is the U of H "warrior" going to be the only "native mascot" allowed ? ... on the basis of racialism ?

I think the result of this nonsense won't be seen for some years down the road. It has been said liberalism always generates the exact opposite of its' stated intent. People will be afraid to say Indian or any other reference to Native Americans and thus they will be forgotten and fade into oblivion. What a great way to show how much you respect them. Somehow those great battles of years gone by loses something when thought of as the Dallas Cattle People and the Washington Politicians.

But U of Hawaii is the "Rainbow Warriors" so obviously they're diverse. < /sarc >

No doubt. I've seen the Hawaiian mascot and I thought that he was a silly characature of what the Hawaiian natives had envisioned for their warrior.

On the other hand, the Ute Indian chiefs and their tribal council were on the TV news last night saying that the Utah Utes name was fine, they were happy that the University of Utah had always consulted them on such matters, and that they felt honored to have the state of Utah and a state university named after them, which projects a positive image of them. They don't like the NCAA taking this action without asking the people that are supposedly offended (in this case, they're not).
