From friends at ABC; Peter Jennings is near death. This is unconfirmed, but from usually reliable sources.

The ABC anchor, who was born in Canada but became a US citizen, announced a few months ago that he was suffering from lung cancer. He has not made a televised appearance since.

"...I won't become part of the lovefest..."

I was very angry with Jennings after his "temper tantrum" comments following the big GOP sweep in 1994, mostly because I admired a man who could reach his level of prominence without even having gone to college, and because he had a good analytical mind and great delivery. I felt let down, I guess. I didn't understand how he could have misread the American voter so badly. Still, whenever I watched network news, it would be Peter Jennings, no contest. He was good at what he did and the broadcast business will not likely find another of his caliber. All they are turning out today are talking heads.
I have lost too many in my own family to cancer of one sort or another. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Prayers for Mr. Jennings and family.
And, no, you will never see a thread of this class on DU.

I am sorry for your loss. My grandmother decided to try the chemo against everyones advice. My grandfathers' final month was terrible, as the chemo actually quickened the end.

Heavy smoker?

When it was first announced about his cancer, I remember the news said he had quit 25 years ago.

Of the three I could always tolerate watching Jennings while Rather and Brokaw were bad for my BP.

Maybe this is just a bad time for him during his treatment and he will rally, some people have very bad side effects during aggressive cancer treatment, but they come through it. I hope this is the case for him. Prayers for Peter Jennings.

I agree with you about "second-hand lung cancer", but I didn't write that post.

May God hold Peter Jennings and his family close to Him now, and give them peace and strength. May He cause Peter's passing to be peaceful and painless, in Jesus' name.

My father died in 88, 6 months after being diagnosed with lung cancer, it is a sad painful way to go, trust me.

"Oh, my goodness...I was thinking, like Tony Snow and Laura Ingraham, he would be getting radiation and chemo, and be back.."

Sadly, lung cancer 5 year survival rates are near zero with a very high rate of death in the first year or so.

Surprisingly fast decline. He must have been diagnosed in a very advanced stage.

My husband had lung cancer and it spread very quickly into his organs and into his bones. There's really not much they can do for it.It's a very painful death.

Praying for a deathbed conversion for Peter.

Yes, indeed. Prayers go up for Peter and his family.

"Stopped years ago, but began again post-9/11"

How sad. It probably wouldn't have made any difference but still it couldn't have helped his health. I pray that he isn't suffering and that he and his family find peace through the Lord.

I really haven't watched Jennings or any network news since the early '80s, when ABC had the three-headed anchor with Jennings, Max Robinson, and Frank Reynolds (who was my personal favorite). Still, Jennings was more watchable than Rather and Brokaw, and before CNN and Fox, I would watch ABC news for any breaking stories or election coverage. Sorry to hear of his illness.
