Contraception Views Sought from Gubernatorial Candidates (WI)

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin has asked the three announced candidates for Governor of Wisconsin to clarify whether they believe contraception is a form of abortion.

"This request is especially pressing in light of recent comments by the state's leading anti-choice, anti-birth control interest group indicating its intention to pass legislation limiting access to contraception, which, contrary to medical science, it believes is a form of abortion," the letter said.

The letter then quotes an Aug. 1 article by Judith Davidoff in The Capital Times that quoted Pro-Life Wisconsin lobbyist Matt Sande as saying, "By outlawing contraception, you're closer to outlawing surgical abortion. We're trying to overturn Roe v. Wade, but the court is pointing us over here (to contraception)."

"Birth control is basic health care, and the men and women of Wisconsin deserve to know where the candidates stand on this issue of fundamental importance," said Kelda Helen Roys, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin in a separate written statement.

The three candidates for governor thus far are incumbent Gov. Jim Doyle, a Democrat, and Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and U.S. Rep. Mark Green of Green Bay, both Republicans.

Of the three, only Doyle has voiced his support for access to contraception, according to NARAL. He also has vetoed "conscience clause" legislation that would have allowed health care providers to withhold services based on their beliefs.

More than 95 percent of U.S. women use contraception at some point in their lives, NARAL Pro-Choice has stated. "Access to birth control is also key to reducing the need for abortion," the group said.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I read this to mean that the Looney Left is absolutely desperate and at the end of their ropes...

Of course the Republican candidates are going to be pro-life. Talk about trying to stack the deck in Doyle's favor. Aarrggghh!

I do believe NARAL is completely nuts and despicable.

That said, I would like to know if a given politician favors banning all forms of birth control. 'Cause that I would consider rather extreme, too, and would vote against in a heartbeat.

Until we get voter registration figured out in this state, these arguments really don't matter because the democrats will cheat their way into office anyway. Did you hear that the state republican party found 9 people who voted in Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis last election? Wonder what party those 27 votes went to?

They're totally lying! No rational Republican is against using birth control to plan the size of your family, fer Pete's Sake. No Republicans that I know in the Real World thinks that birth control is "pre-abortion." These NARAL pukes are 100% insane!

And EVERY Dem I know in Real Life is a Catholic. Go figure. ;)

Yeah, that's pretty much what I figured--they are SO dishonest it's just despicable. Did you hear about the attack ads they put out against Roberts? (See Powerline.com for a healthy fisking if you haven't).

In some ways maybe it's good if ones opponents are so utterly bankrupt and mentally ill. But nevertheless...yuck!

Just heard the new ad smearing Roberts on Rush a few moments ago. What a bunch of hogwash.
