The one of the local Memphis news stations is running a series of stories about a welfare giveaway program. It seems the Federal Govt. has a program to pay the utility bills for those who qualify. People can get up to $500 for that purpose, but they supposedly have to prove that they are low-income, etc.

Every morning this week, people are lining up at a couple of sites in Memphis to get this money. It just so happens that one of the sites is across the street from a temp. employment agency. This agency is needing laborers and warehouse workers.

The news reporter has approched those in line for the handout and asked them if they want a job. Some on camera have said flatly, no. One young able-bodied man was interested and was taken to the employment agency. On camera, the agency person told the young man he could go to work almost immediatly. All he had to do was fill out an application and submit to a drug test. With camera rolling, he mumbled something, and then turned and walked quickly away.

Bottom line, almost no one over a two day period would take a job. They would rather stand in line for free money.
