It isn't going to happen.. ever.

I sit here and shake my head at comments like these. This type of arrogance and the arrogance of people who think this is impossible is scary.

There are people in the DIA and the CIA who think this is VERY possible. There are others within the government who are so concerned that it might be possible that they are trying to put together some kind of procedure to deal with the aftermath.

It may sound good to sit here and assure everyone that there's NO WAY POSSIBLE this could happen.

But it's the same arrogant condescension heard when folks said the Titanic was unsinkable.

While I think it is important to have respect for your enemy, I think this nuke deal is blown way out of proportion. How much do you know about nuclear weapons? I know I don't know sh*t. However, the people that I have listened to, who are knowledgeable, are very skeptical of terrorists being able to bring nukes into and detonating them in this country. IMO it would take skills equating to a Western SpecOP group to conduct such a feat. I have seen nothing of terrorist operations that equate to such skill.

Not impossible, but extremely unlikely.

The 9/11 attacks took a lot of luck on the terrorists' part and a special kind of incompetence on the US's part, a legacy of eight years of Clintonian neglect.

Terrorists do not have the same soft target today that they had in 2001. Moreover, much of the top terrorist leadership, the corporate knowledge behind 9/11, has been killed or captured. The remainder is surely finding it hard to plan and execute grand attacks on the level of a 9/11 or greater when it is spending much of its time running hiding from US special ops by shuttling between a series of caves and safe houses in the rugged far reaches of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Doom and gloomers tend to wildly exaggerate the al Qaeda's resources and abilities and to underestimate our own. On balance though, I would rather that we be hypervigilent.

One chilling interpretation as to why there's been no attacks here since 911 might be this:
A series of small conventional attacks here, like those in London or Spain, would stimulate a much higher level of security here.

And a higher level of security would make smuggling and positioning multiple WMDs much harder to accomplish.

It makes very scary sense to me.

If bin Laden is up to something big, he will walk on tip-toe until it's ready.
