TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Gov. Jeb Bush criticized NCAA officials on Tuesday for their decision to penalize Florida State for using an American Indian nickname and symbols, saying they instead insulted the university and a proud Seminole Tribe of Florida...
...Bush said the NCAA must have better things to do that sit around worrying about the nicknames adopted by its member institutions.
"You know what they ought to be worried about? The graduation rates of most college athletes," the second-term Florida governor said. "Maybe if they had some suggestions on that, that universities could apply and could implement, they could be doing a service to all of us."

It is ridiculous, and a violation of free speech.
I hate Myles Brand.
Any quote from Bobby?
The Seminole Tribe is ok with FSU using Chief Osceola (bless him) as the mascot.
Jeb...you go boy!!
Nothing that can be printed in a family paper.........
PETA and friends want animal mascots banned, too. Goodbye, GATORS?.........
in addition to graduation rates, the ncaa needs to be concerned with arrest rates of their member schools. a recently released felon has just been put back on the team at iowa state university and has also been given back his full-ride scholarship. a non-athlete student recently paid a fine for disorderly conduct and was expelled from the same school. as an iowa taxpayer, i resent financially supporting a texan felon's so-called education when i can no longer afford to send my own grade school children to the school of my choice.
Time for the alumni to tell the colleges that they won't get another penny until they tell these PC nutballs to STFU.
Just watch: next up will be the freakin' Wiccans and pagans protesting the use of "Blue Devils" and "Sun Devils" as mascots.
Very true, the Seminoles in Florida love the mascot. It's the Seminoles out west that are screaming racism. Those are the Seminoles that were relocated from Florida. Sounds like their location has infused them with victim mentality.
Reminds me of a college professor lamenting Indian names for schools a few years back.
Her: Can you imagine if teams used Christian names as mascots?
Me: Well, there's the Padres...
Her: Yeah, well...
Me: ...and the Saints.
Her: *sudden subject change*

NOBODY names a sports team after something or somebody that they don't admire. Naming a sports team after Indians, or Irish, or Scandinavian pillagers is a sign of respect, not a sign of disrespect.
This is what Bobby said:
"All I can say is that I'm a Seminole and always will be a Seminole," Bowden told the Tallahassee Democrat. "This is America, isn't it? Are we still in America?"

Right on, Jeb!!
I see where Barry Richard is going to represent FSU against the NCAA.
The NCAA doesn't have a prayer. Oops. Sorry. The NCAA doesn't have a chance.
We were at FSU for four years while Sir SuziQ was getting his Masters and Phd. We got there just after Bobby Bowden did, and while the great Larry Keys was playing for him. There was just a thrill when Chief Osceola, at the beginning of every game, would ride his horse around the inside of the stadium, then go to the center of the field and plant his spear right in the middle of the FSU logo! The crowd would be on their feet and screaming! Such fun memories.
The best one, though, was when the whole FSU crowd stood and shook their keys in honor of Larry Keys during his last home game as a Seminole. Play ground to a halt on the field as the players were trying to figure out what the noise was. When Larry realized what we were doing, he waved in thanks to the crowd. It was very emotional for everyone!
