One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer of George McGovern (2005)

The film retraces George McGovern's bold and grassroots presidential campaign of 1972 - a campaign that fought to the bitter end for peace and justice... a campaign that positioned ideas and people first... and, for a myriad of reasons, it was a campaign crushed in workmanlike fashion by the Butcher from Whittier, Richard Nixon. The tragedy of the '72 campaign is this: George McGovern might have been the only candidate to run for President in the 20th Century who truly understood what an incredible monument America could be to the human race.

Egads, this movie is bound to become a monument to mankind's inhumanity to celluloid.

I stumbled across this movie list attempting to see if there were any movies being released in the next 6 months I might be inclined to see. In my dissappointment and disgust I ran across this "charmer".

It struck me from the perspective of the severity of complete and total delusion that some liberals suffer from. No that there should be a "gubmint program" or anything, I enjoy watching them like this. The downside is, like a massive spastic colon, Hollywood showers "gems" like this on us now and then.

Really...McGovern?!? I think I was in 2nd grade and between Bugs Bunny cartoons even I was able to peg him for a loser.

So anyway, I posted this for your amusement and discussion. Or so you could just stare at the monitor and shake your head in disbelief as I did at first.

I seem to recall that one of his campaign promises was a thousand dollar payment (tax rebate?) for every American. And of course he was "1000 percent" behind Tom Eagelton, his VP, just before he dropped him.

I remember during the primaries Barbara Walters interviewed Ed Muskie during his failed bid. I was 14 at the time and during the interview he started crying and then he cried harder. I remember thinking he was a little odd but looking back I think this crew of liberal idiots ushered in a whole lotta horse crap

George McGovern always makes me laugh. If I remember the numbers accurately, George voted for himself, his wife voted for him, my aunt voted for him, another woman I know voted for him and Hunter S. Thompson voted for him. Everybody else who voted in 1972 went for Nixon.

The other woman I know who voted for him I only met a few weeks ago. A crowd of 50-year-olds and me (who was born the year Nixon beat McGovern) and they were all trying to remember who ran against Nixon the second time. I told them. The woman argued with me. She told me she stood in line for three hours to vote against Richard Nixon in 1972, but she couldn't remember who she voted for. I told her over and over again that if it was Nixon in '72 she voted for McGovern, but she insisted that wasn't right.

But the conversation had one good outcome other than the obvious one of amusing me ... I finally found out where McGovern's fifth vote came from!

Oh, brother. The "peace" candidate wasn't McGovern, but Eugene McCarthy, whose campaign was ruthlessly crushed by McGovern. As for the rest, one of Hunter Thompson's few good books was Fear And Loathing On The Campaign Trail '72. McGovern comes across with all the charm of Algore, all the relevance of Kerry, and all the sanity of Dean.

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 1972

"Early on [Hunter S.] Thompson got kicked off the Ed Muskie campaign for giving his press pass to some “gin-crazed Boohoo” who ended up terrorizing Muskie on a train trip down the coast of Florida. In retaliation for having his privileges taken away, Thompson, who never liked “Big Ed” anyway, began to write extensively about how it was rumored that Muskie was addicted to a West African drug called Ibogaine, an upper of sorts that keeps a person awake in a very menacing fashion. Thompson speculated that this was probably the reason why Muskie had been acting so “erratic” of late. Unfortunately, he could not confirm it one way or the other because he had been banned from the campaign. Readers and other reporters took the allegation seriously and questions were put to the Muskie campaign. Denying the charge, Muskie expressed outrage. After the campaign ended, Thompson stated that he never accused Muskie of using Ibogaine. “I said it was a rumor to that effect,” Thompson explained. “I made up the rumor.”

I graduated from college in 1972 and remember the shear orgasmic fawning over this clown. IMHO he represents the beginning of a devastating trend in our Republic-a trend resulting in a nation of irresponsible wimps who are unable to even think for themselves, are ready to roll over and play dead wimpering "Please don't hurt me" when faced with any adversary, and are going result in the destruction of our way of life. Sometime I'll tell you what I really think.

Sad thing for the commie loving McGovern is that if the 1972 election were held again today, Nixon--even in his current state--would still beat him!

McG also has the distinction of being the Democrat with the third lowest popular vote percentage in the entire 20th century. Yes, the Dems made a great choice that time.

This man actually won, just not the Presidency. His vision corrupted an entire generation, and led to the deaths of maybe millions. I hope he is rotting in hell if dead, and if alive......I hope he is dreaming nightly of rotting. The legacy of 60's & 70's liberals (really communists) will forever taint this country
