THE 9/11 COMMISSION IN MORTAL DANGER
The Corner on National Review Online ^ | 08/11/05 | John Podhoretz

Posted on 08/11/2005 5:57:46 PM PDT by TonyInOhio

It behaved disgracefully and in a nakedly partisan fashion, with former officials of the Clinton administration attempting to use the platform to damage the president's reelection chances. Then, after months of ludicrous conduct, out of nowhere came the brilliantly conceived and written report that set a new standard of eloquence and coherence for government documents, became a major bestseller and redeemed the commission's reputation.

Well, that didn't last long.

In a story filed at 7:10 PM, the Associated Press is now confirming all the particulars of what will now forever be called the Able Danger disaster. The 9/11 Commission staff did hear about intelligence-gathering efforts that hit pay dirt on the whereabouts of Mohammed Atta -- in 1999 -- and deliberately chose to omit word of those efforts.

And why? Because to do so might upset the timeline the Commission had established on Atta.

And why is that significant? Because the Mohammed Atta timeline established by the Commission pointedly insisted Atta did not meet with an Iraqi intelligence agent in Prague.

And why is that significant? Because debunking the Atta-Iraq connection was of vital importance to Democrats, who had become focused almost obsessively on the preposterous notion that there was no relation whatever between Al Qaeda and Iraq -- that Al Qaeda and Iraq might even have been enemies.

I was very skeptical of this Able Danger stuff about Atta, thought it was just sme way Rep. Curt Weldon was trying to sell a book. No longer. This is clearly becoming the biggest story of the summer -- the fact that, as Andy McCarthy alluded to, the "intelligence wall" set up by 9/11 Commissioner Jamie Gorelick when she was in the Justice Department did, in fact, cause the linchpin of the 9/11 attacks to evade capture by American law enforcement.

So was the staff a) protecting the Atta timeline or b) Jamie Gorelick or c) the Clinton administration or d) itself, because it got hold of the information relatively late and the staff was lazy?

More important, what will co-chairmen Tom (pound his fist on the table) Kean and Lee (look sorrowful) Hamilton do and say in the next 36 hours about this calamity?

but I believe Berger was stealing copies of a memo in which he recommended against killing bin Laden.

IIRC, he made a few trips to the National Archives before the staff got suspicious about whether he was returning everything, and then they marked what they gave him so they could check.

I was just listening to Fox & Friends they are now saying SOME of the commissioners knew about the report that the staffer were suppose to have repressed.

I want names and I want them NOW.

She is a really strange "woman" and not terribly bright. Clinton has that syndrome that he has to be the brightest bulb on the tree and the failures of his Administration are manifested in this particular vice.

I read every book on Clinton that I can get my hands on and even friendlies like Dick Morris can barely say anything positive about either Clinton.

YaYa, Fox & Friends is reporting that some of the commissioners knew, not just the staffers.

Talk about death by a thousand cuts. They are dribbling out the truth in hopes of easing the shock of the story.

Wasn't there some controversy over whether -- or why -- it was Lehman who, years later, signed documents that Kerry trotted out to prove that his military service was meritorious?

One of his discharges, wasn't it? And I seem to recall Lehman being quoted as not being able to recall signing it.

IMHO, Reno was just another pawn who was told what to do never asked.

They are both so full of sh!t and so hungry for power it envelops their entire existence. And if anything gets in their way, watch out.

I want to bash my head into a wall! ---

***

You might as well go ahead and do it........ the media and the schools have brilliantly dumbed down America. This country is in deep sh*t as long as the people are so ignorant. Have you ever seen 'Jay Walking' on Leno? 'Nuff said!

I'm 58 and have had my share of thrills and happiness. I just feel sorry for the kids today............. a ruined culture in their faces! Little romance, no sweetness, no excellent lyrics in music, no love for great writing, no love for history....... it is very, very, very, SAD!

I thinks ever since Morris was physically tackled by Bubba you can erase the "friendlies" from him.

It was my understanding that gorelick created the wall while "dykewood"(janet reno) was busy killing people at Waco.

You're mostly right, but "dykewood" was being left to her desires with young (14 year old) girls.

Hillary was the one who made the Waco thing happen.

No-one with any integrity sat on that commission.

No-one.

I'm about a year ahead of you, my daughter was in law enforcement and there are a few youngsters out there that can carry on the American way. Some of them are in Iraq right now but I get your response.

I know and I am heartened by it. To many men and women have spilled their blood for us to give up this country without a fight. I never wish for a Civil War, but if it is ever thrust upon us, then I will go to battle with everything I have. Hillary must not be allowed to be President. Not Now Not Ever.

Are people still doubting him, Dog?

I'm only saying that a few months ago I doubted him and thought he was just being a publicity hound for his book.
