'Star Trek' fans descend on Las Vegas (Geek Alert)

Convention at LV Hilton can bring out a little Andorian in anyone

It must be difficult to publicly maintain that you are not a geek when, in fact, your T-shirt proclaims as much, and you're standing next to your big sister at a "Star Trek" convention.

Nevertheless, that's what Jim Moorhouse did Thursday, the first day of this year's trekkie gathering at the Las Vegas Hilton: the fourth annual Official Star Trek Convention.

"I like to say I'm destroying the stereotype because I'm cool," said Moorhouse, 38, a public relations rep for a sports league who really did seem like a cool guy despite having "GEEK" printed on the front of his T-shirt.

There were, of course, the requisite pasty-white pudgy guys in floppy sandals and tie-dyed T-shirts all over the Hilton's grounds. Organizers say the convention, which runs through Sunday, will attract about 12,000 "Star Trek" fans.

Fans, most of whom were not pudgy or pasty, said it's no surprise that the convention attracts so many people given that "Star Trek" is the greatest television show in history.

Does a gerbil come with the Sulu "action" figure? Maybe in the fag-bag he's carrying?

Farscape is much better than either B5 or Star Trek.

I'm a huge Farscape fan...but there is no way it beats Babylon 5. At least, not in my book.

I think Farscape jumped the shark a bit near the end with the school lunch lady character and it's dabbling with anti-patriotic pro-globalism themes after 9/11 that just rang really sour for me after 9/11. They did a really good job wraping it up, though.

I was at a Star Trek Convention a few years ago. Imagine that.

Ole James T. hissef was the guest of honor. It was pretty neat listening to him speak. He mentioned the captain of the plane he rode into Dallas made an announcement on the PA. "Ladies and gentleman, have no worries, the Captain of the Strship Enterprise is aboard to assist if needed."

" What? No more COMDEX???

It imploded. Financial problems, and not much interest from vendors any more."

DEFCON still goes though! Amid the hilarity this year, a 124.(small change) mile, unamplified, 802.11 shot!

Geeks can be pretty amazing.

live long and prosper, May the force be with you, and if somebody tries to kill you, you try to kill'em right back! frakers!

Top sends

I saw a preview screening of a near-final cut of the Serenity movie. Even people who never watched the series who went with me liked it.

Saw it. The movie, like the show, left me indifferent (so I gues if you like the show...).

I'm told the main attraction will feature Kirk & Nimoy singing their greatest hits, including a newly recorded duet on 'Sweet Neo-Con'.

And all are firmly behind Doctor Who.

I heard these conventions are like geek-sex-fests.

They wish, though there are probably some easy fat girls.

Fair enough. I watched all 5 years of both and while B5 had some really cool episodes and characters, I personally thought that overall, Farscape was a better show.

I never saw the themes you mention. I agree. The mini-series wrap-up was a really cool way to end the show.

Yes, I liked the show. But a few of my friends who were indifferent to the show and only watched a few episodes borrowed the DVDs from me after seeing Serenity. And another friend who was indifferent to the show while it was on Fox liked it after watching the DVDs. As with everything, I don't expect everyone to like it but the reactions people have to Firefly and Serenity seem a little more complex than their reactions to a lot of other Science Fiction shows.

I never saw the themes you mention.

The whole arc where they went to Earth through the wormhole and the evil xenophobic US government wanted to keep all the knowledge and technology to themselves while John Crichton wanted the UN and the entire planet to know everything. Did you really miss the message there? I don't think it could have been much heavier.

I'm with you - Farscape was my favorite. But, Shatner is great and I used to race home from work to see the original Trek at 5:00 pm every day!

Yeah -- it spoke to my little sci fi-twisted heart as soon as I read it.

I LOVE his Priceline commercials.

What? Are you saying George Takei was a homo? Wait, maybe I don't want to know...

They may take away my geek card for admitting this, but I've never seen a single ep of Farscape, despite it being recommended all over the place. I'mm have to check it out.

I'd at Stargate to the mix, though...
