August 10, 2005 The new neighbor of a Merced school has many parents angry.
Gary Barker is a registered sex offender. He now lives just feet from Golden Valley High School.
Parents are especially worried because the start of school is just days away. Right now, they're working on a plan to get Gary Barker's picture circulating so everyone will recognize his face.
It didn't take long for the word to spread about the high risk sex offender who's now living right across the street from the high school.
Parents are outraged and many are already promising to protest.
"He knew what he did was wrong, you know he paid the price for it. But still, we're putting all these kids in jeopardy here," says parent Dixie Paul.
Merced police say 46-year-old Gary Barker walked into headquarters Tuesday to register his new address. He recently moved to Merced from Modesto.
Police want the public to take note of Barker's prior convictions.
"Barker is classified as a high risk sex offender because of the number and the severity of his prior criminal convictions," said Merced District Attorney Gordon Spencer.
Barker's crimes involve girls under the age of 14. When he was released from prison, he was on parole until several months ago.
Now, he's free to live where he chooses, as long as he updates authorities. But his choice, and proximity to teenagers, is what's troubling to some parents who wonder why he is there.
"It just doesn't make sense to me ... I just don't understand it," said parent Elizabeth Ortega.
The school principal says he will do everything he can to make sure students are safe on campus, but he is urging parents and students to be on guard at all times.
Police also want Barker to know that they'll be keeping a close eye on him.

Sex Offender Living Near School - Gary Ryan Barker Community Outraged
AS THEY HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO BE! The safety of their children is important and this pervert has no right to be near them.
Red Bluff Daily NewsRed Bluff sex offender sentenced to jail term Friday, August 12, 2005 - RED BLUFF A 20-year-old man who pleaded guilty to having oral sex with a 12-year-old girl was sentenced to 270 days in jail and five years probation this week. Anthony Gabriel Martinez of Red Bluff pleaded guilty in Tehama County Superior Court to one count of a lewd act on a child and had two other counts of the same charge and three counts of oral copulation of a person under 18 dismissed, according to court records. Martinez had been living with his girlfriend's family during the summer of 2004 and had oral sex with the young girl while his girlfriend was at the hospital, District Attorney Gregg Cohen said. Cohen said that he was hoping for a prison term for Martinez but that the probation and psychological reports recommended probation. "With a young perpetrator, often that is the assessment of the psychologist," Cohen said. Cohen said he was disappointed in the sentencing. "In any child molest case I want to see that one, the perpetrator is sentenced to prison and two, for as long as legally possible," Cohen said.
