Archives Staff Was Suspicious of Berger
Washington Post ^ | July 22, 2004 | John F. Harris and Susan Schmidt

Posted on 08/13/2005 2:37:37 PM PDT by george76

What he did not know as he labored through that long Thursday was that the same Archives employees who were solicitously retrieving documents for him were also watching their important visitor with a suspicious eye.

After Berger's previous visit, in September, Archives officials believed documents were missing. This time, they specially coded the papers to more easily tell whether some disappeared...

As his attorneys tell it, Berger had no idea in October that documents were missing from the Archives, or that archivists suspected him in the disappearance. It was not until two days later, on Saturday, Oct. 4, that he was contacted by Archives employees who said that they were concerned about missing files, from his September and October visits.

Berger, his attorney Lanny Breuer said, checked his office and realized for the first time that he had walked out -- unintentionally, he says -- with important papers...

Several days later, after he had retained Breuer as counsel, Berger volunteered that he had also taken 40 to 50 pages of notes during three visits to the Archives beginning in July, the lawyer said...

By then, however, Archives officials had served notice that there were other documents missing. Despite searching his home and office, Berger could not find them. By January, the FBI had been brought in, and Berger found himself in a criminal investigation...

The documents that Berger has acknowledged taking -- some of which remain missing -- are different drafts of a January 2000 "after-action review" of how the government responded to terrorism plots at the turn of the millennium. The document was written by White House anti-terrorism coordinator Richard A. Clarke, at Berger's direction when he was in government.

I wonder if they have made Sandy Berger take a lie detector test.

Berger was stealing and destroying Able Danger documents. The Millenium Plot documents were part of his cover story.

Sounds like the whole Clintoon administration is nothing but a bunch of criminals. Berger destroyed very important documents and could very well cause the 9/11 commission a lot of grief. So far the commission is trying to blame the staff, but the buck doesn't stop there. That is the song they keep charging the Republicans with, the buck doesn't stop and goes to the top.

...he also feels a sense of injustice that after building a reputation as a tireless defender of his country that many Republicans would try to assassinate his character to pursue their own ends."

No shame or remorse from this puke!

He got the job done. He made off with serious proof of the damage caused by clinton and company in Able Danger.

Even after he was accused of stealing documents (unknown to the public at the time), he was out there attacking the Bush administration on terrorism and national security during last year's election while working the ropes for Kerry.

Then he got an easy out plea bargain that gets him no jail time for stealing and destroying top secret documents. The cherry on top is that he is eligible to get his clearance back in 3 years in time to serve her highness Hillary Scumton when she is President.

Wake up folks. We are talking dangerous people here and the spinless Republicans are doing NOTHING about all of it even though they have the power and the proof.

"This is just a distraction from getting Rove."

On the contrary. Rove directed the Archives employees to surreptiously stuff the documents down Berger's pants. See, it was all Rove's fault. Just ask any DU'er. They'll tell you. /S

Um, Mr. Berger, are those top secret documents in your pants or are you just happy to see me?

I think it was related to Able Danger. I think that is why the demos and ex-Clinton staff people seem to avoid this subject like the plague.

Stealing and destroying. Maybe stealing and replacing, too. What's in the NA is now suspect, if not worthless.

"I think he was taking and destroying Able Danger documents"

The question is, will it be investigated? If Berger and Able Danger are connected, it makes Watergate look like a kindergarten plot.

Able Danger needs to be looked into. The American people absolutely have a right to know the truth. Democrats do not get a pass because they are desperate to regain power or think themselves elitists.

Hell, ANY clintooon scandal from those 8 years would make Watergate look like a kindergarten plot!
