i get the sinking feeling that the west is slowly extricating itself from support of Israel.

It's obvious that most of Europe would rather see Israel simply disappear, but now i think the political calculation in the US is turning the same way.

the sad thing is that israeli and american politicians are thinking along the same lines,

and by the way, if Israeli is pulling out of the "occupied territories" shouldn't Egypt get Gaza back and Jordan get the West Bank? hehe, not that they want the mess of the palestinians either...

You are absolutely right. I was just watching NBC news where the reporter mentioned that the "Palestinians" will be in control for the first time in 38 years.

It's an example of the ignorance and lies that permeate discussion of the Mideast.

"Palestinians" aren't getting anything "back". These Arabs never had anything resembling independence. This is Israel surrendering to a band of terrorists created originaly and specifically by the Soviets and the Arab World as the shock troops in the Arab war against Israel.

Well, this world is either going to have a peaceful future, or a violent end.

The Israelis (which no matter how you see today's events) HAVE BENEFITTED at least militarily from an association with the West, though I would argue they have been hamstrung politically simultaneously through this relationship.

If the West is extricating itself from support (and liability) from Israel, then either the Mohammedists will back off after this (unlikely) and have peace, or they will attack and there will be no support for Israeli restraint.

If we're never going to have real peace, then the only way we'll have real war is with Israel unleashed. Why support the gradual withering of Israeli resolve such that there's nothing left to "extricate" the West from? If Bush wanted to destroy Israel, he'd simply continue the death by a thousand cuts diplomacy.
