From what I've read it seems that Dayan's actions were due at least in part to the fact that he wasn't at all religious himself - reportedly, when he saw how his Jewish brethren were reacting to reaching the Wall, he said "What is this Vatican?"

Nice find. Clearly Dayan, who most consider one of Israel's greatest heroes, had respect for the Muslims(and vice versa).
