Can tell you don't know much about rural texas. Guns are always being fired close to President's place in Crawford, as well as on the President's place.

I hope for those anti war protestors sake they are gone by the first day of dove season, if not, well, they are in for alot more than just one gun being fired in that area!!!

So you think living near the President's ranch means you can lose your civil liberties?

You SURE you're on the right board here, sport?
This is TEXAS, not some candy-ass eastern state.

According to Mattlage he wasn't just 'shooting in the air', he was practicing for Dove season.

If so, no problem. The press reported the shot was "fired into the air", but it wouldn't be the first time a reporter screwed up a significant fact.

From past reading, I was left with the understanding that "consent by congress" is exactly what was given at the time the treaty with the Republic of Texas concerning statehood was ratified. Leaving the only additional action required in the hands of Texans. The Constitution doesn't give an expiration date for consent in this case, especially as it was a treaty.

But I'll be honest, I haven't read the treaty, so I could be full of it. Now I want to find it and read it though.

The Constitution doesn't give an expiration date for consent in this case, especially as it was a treaty.

The Treaty you allude to was never consumated as it wasn't agreed to and signed by both parties... Texas was admitted to the Union via a Congressional Joint Resolution of March 1, 1845. The Joint Resolution was submitted to the voters of Texas on Oct. 13, 1845 and was approved. On Dec. 29, 1845 the President signed the Joint Resolution accepting Texas into the Union as a state.

A little history here if you are interested: http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ref/abouttx/annexation/index.html
