As black clouds blotted the Sunday night sky, San Antonio Police Officer Dave Renn wheeled his cruiser beneath the Wurzbach Parkway overpass at Perrin Beitel Road, stopping when he saw a peculiar sight.
An arm jutting from inside a curbside storm drain flailed on the street, its hand clutching a pink sandal that blinked a red light with each strike against the pavement.
Renn backed up, thinking it was kids playing a prank. He stopped his patrol car, stepped out and bent down over the drain. Then he saw a frantic woman yelling, "Help! 911!"
The woman, who had been arguing with her husband earlier in the evening, fled her nearby home and sought refuge in a storm gulley. She soon got lost in a dark maze of underground channels.
Kneeling, Renn calmed the woman and then called dispatchers, who contacted the city.
Supervisor Gilbert Roque arrived with San Antonio Water System workers Alex Salazar and Ruben Moncivaiz. They'd recovered keys, cell phones and radios from storm drains before, but never a woman.
Roque said it was a good thing storm clouds stayed away. The area was prone to flooding in heavy rains.
The woman told Renn she saw light shining through the curbside opening, then walked toward the drainage spot, where she had stood for four hours.
"I heard noises," she said, peering from the narrow slot as the crew was trying to free her. "I told them, 'I'm friendly.'"
Salazar and Moncivaiz used a special key to loosen bolts on a nearby manhole cover. Both men pulled the grime-covered woman from the hole. The only injuries she experienced were ant bites.
"All in a day's work," Salazar said, packing equipment on a truck. "It's our good deed for the day."
she is lucky the CHUD didn't get her
What a genius.
"I told them, 'I'm friendly.'"
Likely Chud mixed with Crud.
Yes: Obviously she lost the argument.
LOL!
"The woman, who had been arguing with her husband earlier in the evening, fled her nearby home and sought refuge in a storm gulley."
Silly twit. She should have gone to the mall.
I have heard of sleeping on the couch before, but this?
She must be the economical type. Storm drains are a cheaper visit than the mall.
