Explorer Meriwether Lewis was born on August 18, 1774 near Charlottesville, Virginia.
French astronomer Pierre Jules César Janssen discovered helium while analysing the chromosphere during a total solar eclipse in India in 1868. This was the first element detected in space before being found on Earth.
The Wizard of Oz premiered on this day in 1939.
