Unfortunately, there are no national holidays celebrated today.

However, some of the events that occurred on this day include:

Virginia Dare, granddaughter of Gov. John White of the Colony of Roanoke, becomes the first English child born in the Americas in 1587.

Explorer Meriwether Lewis was born on August 18, 1774 near Charlottesville, Virginia.

French astronomer Pierre Jules César Janssen discovered helium while analysing the chromosphere during a total solar eclipse in India in 1868. This was the first element detected in space before being found on Earth.

The Wizard of Oz premiered on this day in 1939.

1983 - Hurricane Alicia hits the Texas coast, killing 22 people and causing over USD $1 billion in damage (1983 dollars).

I remember Alicia; it peeled the roof off of my school's gym.
