The media frenzy surrounding Cindy Sheehan, the woman who lost a son in Iraq, is a prime example of what has gone wrong with 24-hour news coverage.
The woman is clearly unhinged, and while we need to respect her grief at losing her son, it is now abundantly evident that her campaign has moved beyond her personal loss to her political ideology.
It is embarrassing and inhumane for the media to expose this poor womens unbalanced behavior. Somebody needs to step in to provide her with a quiet place to rest and, one would hope, regain her rationality and emotional balance. It is terribly sad to see the press ¬¬ bored from a slow-news August and the forced inactivity in Crawford, Texas exploit someone who has become a crackpot.
Cindy Sheehans campaign long ago lost any pretense of being a mothers grief-stricken reaction to her sons tragic death. When Sheehans 24-year-old son, Casey, was killed in Baghdad last year, she founded an antiwar organization called Gold Star Families. Now, she has combined Madison Avenue and K Street by hiring a political consultant, public relations advisors, and establishing a website in an organized effort to keep the cameras on her and her cause.
All that high-powered activity is being funded by three major-league, Far Left sponsors Moveon.org (notorious for Michael Moores efforts to keep the President from being re-elected), TrueMajority (established by the liberal Ben and Jerrys ice cream dynasty) and Democracy for America and seems to be linked to an orchestrated effort to harass and embarrass President Bush.
As she has moved from grieving mother to political spokesperson, Mrs. Sheehan has become shrill. She is calling President Bush the biggest terrorist in the world. She is accusing the U.S. of waging a nuclear war in Iraq. She is even urging the President to send his two party-animal daughters into the conflict and she is threatening to impeach everyone in the White House and U.S. military. Those are not rational statements especially when accompanied by what news people are kindly calling her potty mouth. The woman can spew out foul language and call people names with the best drunken sailor or dock worker.
In a blatant contradiction of her major complaint (that Bush hasnt been willing to meet with her), Sheehan met with the President shortly after her sons death in April 2004. Afterward, she expressed appreciation for the Presidents sympathy. Now she calls him callous and says her earlier description of the meeting with the President was colored by her shock and bereavement. Equally sad is the fact that Cindy has not spoken with some members of her family since President Bush was elected President.
Her supporters are calling Cindy Sheehan, the Rosa Parks of the Iraqi War, while others are describing her as the face of the anti-war movement.
It is unspeakably sad that a woman who should be grieving the loss of her son has, instead, turned to name-calling and unseemly behavior in an ideological campaign that dishonors the memory of her son and disparages the heroic cause for which he gave his life. And, it is equally sad that the media continue to egg her on.

For Cindy:

Rosa Parks would be offended.
I should hope so.
Your all are so mean to me, I have every right to say "Our Country is not worth defending"
/Barf ALERT
Lets see, her husband just filed for divorce, her other son and her whole familiy is very angry at her over this and now she is leaving the site for a few days.
Meds are in order.
I hope the loons on the left keep giving her coverage, it is good for us that they do.
Molly, there is so much speculation on Cindy Sheehan....her right to speak; her motives; if she's being exploited or not.....I wish instead that the questions to and about her would center on her son Casey. Would it help her to talk about Casey?
What was he like? What can you tell us about your firstborn? Tell us about him....did he enjoy school? Sports? What fascinated him as a little boy? Was he close to his brother & sisters? When did he decide to join the military? Was he, like so many young people, moved to join up after the attack on 9/11?
Were you and the family able to keep in touch with him while he was in Iraq? If you can bear it, share what he told you in e-mails, calls and letters. I hope he made some special friends in his unit....I suspect he did, because he reenlisted. Why did he decide to sign on for another tour of duty? Did his commander and fellow troops reach out to you to try and help you and the family?
We know too well how she feels about the WOT and President Bush...but why aren't we asking her about the person, Casey, who brought her to the spotlight?
grandma mac
I am so sorry for her mother's illness, but it may be the best thing that could have happened to Cindy. It will get her out of the limelight, and the press will move on to some other left wing freak.
The folks in the MSM think they are so smart. Why haven't they recognized this simple principle of psychology?
Transference: In psychoanalysis, the process by which emotions and desires originally associated with one person, such as a parent or sibling, are unconsciously shifted to another person, especially to the analyst.
Her situation reminds me of Family Ties, the left-wing '60s mom raises a conservative, patriotic son who joins the military and gets killed fighting for what he believes in. She is so mad at her son and has been for a long time. She is just transfering her anger from son to president and the media is abetting her. Grandma Mac had a great post about what the media should be asking her.
Hmmm, interesting analysis.
What's bad, IMO, is that with the press "Its all about Cindy, all the time". One minute of Cindy, and just maybe 10-15 seconds of "oh, by the way..." And that was on Fox this morning. Most of the MSM ignores the other side.
Not good for my blood pressure.
not to sound cold hearted but, ITS A WAR LADY SOMETIMES PEOPLE DIE. and its always someones husband, son, friend, brother
Isn't one of the Bush daughters teaching in Africa? What is Cindy doing to make the world better?
She never really talks about Casey but then this is "The Cindy Show" and she is the star of it. She seems to have no desire to share center ring with anyone else. I have yet to see her shed a genuine tear although she spends a lot of time screwing her face into contortions in an attempt to look like she's crying. I feel sorry for Casey for having such a disrespectful mother and I thank him for his service.
She's not losing it because of poor Casey. She's losing it because she's a flaming lefty, and the beginnings of the imminent marriage breakup could well be why she decided to "look for love" in all the wrong places and use Casey to do it. Lefties are always out for themselves.
So, husband, home, family, and just wait until the IRS gets a hold of her. You think she's crying now. Wait until they bleed her drier than the Sahara!
