Police in Øksnes and Bø in Vesterålen, high up on Norway's northwest coast, have such equipment shortages that they have to call a taxi to respond to emergency calls.
Area police have had their fleet of vehicles trimmed from two to one due to budget cuts, and have repeatedly had to ring a taxi when needing another car to respond to a call, NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting) reports.
The mayor is so exasperated that he is considering donating a kick-sled to the force for the winter.
"If we are to have mobile police in the municipality then we are going to have to pool resources and buy a kick-sled," Mayor Per Ole Larsen told NRK.
"With the large distances we have here in Vesterålen we should be getting more cars, not fewer like we see today," Larsen said. And the demand for more cars won't be affected if they do get a winter kick-sled.
"We can joke about it now, but this is a serious matter that must be addressed," Larsen said.
Some sort of self-propelled thing?

This is hilarious! No, actually it's very sad. For the record, Norway is the country where international terrorist Mullah Krekar and many others were given political asylum. So if there is some sort of funding problem, blame the lenient admission policy, guys!
I remember spending time in Romania some years ago. The local police didn't have any handcuffs, and not one police vehicle. They simply stopped people and asked for a ride to wherever they had to go. The locals didn't mind, they considered it their contribution to local security (as far as security goes in Romania). That's life in a former communist dictatorship. But Norway, with its high living standard, of all places....!
Well this place is far north and with almost no population.
The taxes in Norway are still not high enough! Even in the USSR, where the taxes were 100%, the police still had "shortages" of "vital" equipment.

Remember there were no tax in the USSR because the state was giving the pay check. Atleast thats what I heard
Amazing. Reminds me of a recent situation with one of the police forces in the metro Atlanta area (can't remember which one) that had to ground their cars because of mismanagement of funds. Someone had neglected to pay the car insurance bill.
