Folk Singer Supports Anti-War Protesters

CRAWFORD, Texas Aug 22, 2005 — Joan Baez was against the Vietnam War and she showed it appearing at marches, once even blocking the entrance of a military induction center.

The folk singer is against the Iraq war, too, and she showed her support Sunday to protesters camping out near President Bush's ranch.

Baez took to the stage for about 500 people on an acre lot offered by a landowner who opposes the war, performing such classic peace anthems as "Song of Peace," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" and "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot."

Not far way is the camp started by Cindy Seehan, whose son Casey was killed in Iraq.

"In the first march I went to (opposing Vietnam) there were 10 of us. This is huge," Baez told the relatives of fallen soldiers before performing just up the road from the ranch.

For Baez, an anti-war movement was inevitable.

"It was the final tear for the overflow and you can't stop running water," she said. "Cindy's was the final tear."

Downtown, more Bush supporters arrived at a pro-Bush camp that had been set up as a reaction to Sheehan's. As of Sunday afternoon, more than 150 people had visited the large tent with "God Bless Our President!" and "God Bless Our Troops" banners and a life-size cardboard cutout of Bush.

"When we saw this, we said, `Thank God you're here'," said Frances Lee, who came from Douglasville, Ga., with neighbor Brenda Bohanan. They planned to hold pro-Bush banners down the street from the protesters.

"We said, `We wanted y'all to know that there are people from all over the United States that care'," Lee said.

The pro-Bush camp is called "Fort Qualls," for Marine Lance Cpl. Louis Wayne Qualls, 20, killed in Fallujah last fall. His father, Gary Qualls of Temple, said the anti-war demonstrators are being disrespectful to soldiers.

Sheehan's 24-year-old son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, also died last year in Iraq. He is among more than 1,800 U.S. soldiers killed since the March 2003 invasion.

Sheehan, of Vacaville, Calif., started the anti-war demonstration on Aug. 6 and vowed to remain until Bush agreed to meet with her or until his monthlong vacation ends Sept. 3. She flew to Los Angeles last week after her 74-year-old mother had a stroke but is expected to return to Texas in a few days.

I read in some news article that they expected 1000 to come to hear her. Too bad they were disappointed by the turn-out!

I hate folk singers.

If I Had A Hammer, there wouldn't be any folk singers.

What? You mean she didn't protest Clinton's war?

There must be some mistake here...

Joan dear, say it aint so. You got so wrapped up in the Viet Nam protest, you did not care what would happen after the United States pulled out. Later your eyes were opened and you said you regretted what you did. Now, you by the grace of God, have been given a chance to redeem your earlier action, and what do you do, protest.

Joan, please, think for a minute. In the 60s your voice gave support to those that were killing American boys, and when we pulled out, went to killing their own citizens by the millions.

Today your voice is giving aid and comfort to those that want us, and that includes you, dead. Have you not grown in 40 years? Have you not seen that tyranny when not opposed, continues? Can you not not see the difference between the United States bring democracy to a region, and terrorist killing woman and children?

It is too late for you Joan, you have been absorbed by the dark side, and I will mourn your passing, because even though I dislike your polictics, I loved your music.

Didn't she have an epiphany about tyrant regimes when she put out a full page ad in the NY Times about the horrors Pol Pot regime? Geez, looks like she's about to make another mistake again only to be proven wrong later.

Forgive me for saying so, but one tactical nuclear weapon detonated on Max Yasgur's farm would have spared the Republic an untold amount of grief.

It would have been a small price to pay.

The first was the split within the left-liberal camp in the US. This was symbolized by the action of singer and civil rights activist Joan Baez in supporting a full page advertisement in the New York Times condemning Vietnam's re-education camps and human rights abuses. Her sources of information included recently resettled refugees in America who had undergone incarceration despite their anti-American activism and NLF sympathies in the pre-1975 period. The result was splintering of the Indochina Lobby with pro-Hanoi hardliners increasingly condoning Vietnam's slide into the Moscow camp.[14]

Douglas Pike, Indochina Archive director at UC Berkeley, fondly recalls a conference of antiwar activists not long after the New York Times advertisement appeared which turned into a shouting match between doves who now could not agree with one another on whether to support or condemn Hanoi. He may have been facetious, but Pike, who became famous for being an outspoken State Department hawk, saw more fury between them than he had ever seen between hawks and doves. There was no lost love between either side, to be sure, but one would perhaps have expected more civility from "pacifists." As lines were drawn and crossed in the Third Indochina Conflict (the invasion of Cambodia by Vietnam), similar lines were drawn in the West as well, where a distinctly pro-Hanoi faction critical of the Khmer Rouge formed, leaving behind only the truest believers in Pol Pot (i.e., the last of STAV scholars).[15] Like F.A. Hayek's dedication of his classic 1944 treatise The Road to Serfdom to "Socialists of all parties," this thesis is about some of these same socialists.
